Review of Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide
Are you an author? Are you intending to write a book? If yes, then the book Creating Literary Stories: A Fictional Writers' Guide by William Coles, is the one you should be looking for. This is because in the book, the author has explained in-depth some of these basic elements of literary writing, as seen below.
When it comes to narration, the author has shown how one should choose to go with the first-person narrator, the second person, or the third person, giving the advantages and disadvantages of each narrator, depending on the message you want to put across. Dialogue and conflict are key features in many literary works. In the book, William Coles demonstrates to us how we can create conflict between characters through dialogue. In terms of characterization, the author has explained to us how we should not overdevelop or underdevelop a character and also not doom his/her fate. William Coles tells us that your role as a fictional writer should not always be to persuade your readers, but to narrate how you feel about a specific subject and let your readers think for themselves.
To tell you the truth, I really enjoyed almost every aspect of the book. As an aspiring author, I really benefited a lot from the many teachings that were there. I learnt how to begin and end a fictional story in a captivating way, how to use humor and suspense in the story, and also how to best express abstract feelings like love and hate in your story. The best part of this book is that the author not only told us what to do but also showed us how to do it using relevant examples from famous literary works such as Emile Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights. William Coles has shown us what not to do at the beginning and end of a story. We have been shown what not to do in contrast to what to do so that we can identify the mistakes.
After reading this book, I found no other thing to dislike about it apart from the grammar mistakes and typos.
I would give this book a rating of 3 stars out of 4. I deducted one star because of the few grammatical and spelling errors that I found. William Coles found a way to keep us engaged from the beginning to the end, and once you have an interest and you start reading it, I would honestly tell you there is no going back. In the book, there is the use of some profane language. I would recommend this book to teenagers and adults who are authors or want to be authors. It may also be helpful to any other person who is interested in knowing more about the basics of fictional writing for whatever reason.
