Review of Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (German Edition)
Idiom Attack Vol.1 Everyday Living (German Edition) is a collection of almost 300 North American idioms most used today. The book is arranged in a beautiful format in English and German, written by Peter Liptak. Also, the book contains 25 chapters that entail idioms of different themes in life. The author starts by describing an idiom and defining it as a combination of two or more words that mean something different from the literal meanings of the individual words. The writer also gives the meaning in English, an example usage in a sentence followed by the meanings, synonyms, and application in the German language.
Also, at the end of each chapter, Peter gives a story designed to help the reader understand the rightful meaning of the expressions. Liptak also gives test and discussion questions that assess readers' understanding while triggering them to use their target language. The chapters are organized into 25 sections, making it easy for readers to access an idiom on a particular theme. Idioms are complex phrases that many Germans who try to learn English find difficult to understand. Therefore, Peter Liptak intentionally uses a simple language that ensures the book is easy to read, even for a German native.
I liked the book's writing style because it was designed such that the translations in German followed the English explanations. Also, the author maintains an easy language to make the text very clear for beginners. The book also helped me understand some English idioms that I had not known before. The use of example sentences for each idiom in both languages, English and German, provides an in-depth understanding and application of the meaning for the reader. The author also provided an index at the back of the book to help the reader easily access an idiom inside the book.
Unfortunately, some aspects of the book that I feel are not appropriate. First, the writing format where the German translation follows the English explanation brings discord in the reading flow for English readers. Also, failing to arrange the idioms in alphabetical order makes it difficult for the reader to locate an idiom, although the author provides an index at the end.
Although the negatives were present, I read and finished the book. It is a very educational book, and it is suitable for any German speaker who wants to learn English or English natives wishing to learn German. The author also recommends the book as resource material, a supplement for personal study, and a textbook for learners in a classroom. It can be read by anyone regardless of race or age.
I found no grammatical errors while reading through; therefore, the book was exceptionally well-edited. I recommend such a fantastic book for reading, and I rate it four out of four stars. Also, the author uses clear illustrations, citations, and references, which makes the book very clear for reading. If you struggle to learn the English language, I highly recommend Idiom Attack Vol. 1. You will find it very helpful.
