Review of Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (German Edition)
When it comes to learning a new language, idioms are often neglected or seen as less of a priority to learn. However, it is an essential part of language learning, as it gives us a way to express ourselves in a more creative way. Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (German Edition) by Peter Liptak allows language learners to understand and learn to use the most commonly used North American idioms. The book is co-authored by siblings Matthew and Jay Douma, and the German translation was provided by Angela Basteri.
What I like about the book is that while most phrasebooks list words from A to Z, the idioms in this book were organised into 25 chapters that each correlated to a given theme such as shopping, school, telephone and expressions used in the household. This was very useful as it provides a way for learners to identify what situation an idiom is most suitable for. Each chapter included simple illustrations to help students better understand idioms in that particular theme. The book also provides multiple examples of how idioms are used in English sentences in various situations. Additionally, it also includes fill in the blanks activities and crosswords sections that students can use to solidify the knowledge they had just learned. There is also a section that provided questions for further discussion, which can be useful for teachers and students who are learning in a classroom. It can also be used as prompts for solo learners to practice.
As a language learner, I think the German translations are fairly accurate and easy to understand. A few idioms were so commonly used that I did not even realise it was an idiom to begin with, such as "fall asleep" or "make a call". Some idioms are translated in a very literal sense, which can be confusing at times. Personally, I would prefer if the translations were focused more on the core meaning of the idiom rather than individual words.
Overall, I would say that it is a very engaging and helpful resource. The book was also exceptionally well-edited, as expected from a book written to teach a language. I found no errors that would take away from the reading experience. Therefore, I am happy to award this book 4 out of 4 stars.
I highly recommend this book to German natives who are learning English. Students who understand English and want to learn German can also benefit from reading this book. In my opinion, this book is most suited for intermediate speakers, as it is a handy resource to improve one's use of figurative speech. It provides a lot of valuable resources but it does require students to have basic knowledge of the English language in order to understand the examples given. It may also be a useful resource for advanced speakers to expand their vocabulary and gain exposure to idioms that are frequently used by native speakers.
