Review of Beneath the Muscle
Beneath the Muscle by Lauren Powers is an inspirational book focused on the life of Lauren Powers, from her childhood all the way to her life as a professional bodybuilder. Her story is something one can relate to and really connect with, as she is so intentional and really opens up to the reader with the intention to prove to us that everyone has something great inside and we can indeed be whatever we want to be, only if we tap to that inner champion. Lauren takes us through her life growing up, all the challenges she faces as a child, from bullying to poor eyesight to family issues. The best part is that none of these break her. She does tremendously just to prove to her family how capable she is. Lauren comes out as a very outgoing lady with the heart for lots of things, something that gets her into addiction, but she, later on, breaks free through her family’s support and intervention. Through this book, Lauren gives us the chance to connect with her as a lady, outside the fame and the champion that she later on becomes.
Beneath the Muscle has many positive aspects and pointers that anyone can use to grow in life and make a positive change for themselves and the world. Looking back at Lauren’s early years, she faces lots of bullying at school, but this doesn’t demotivate her. Once she gets glasses, she really thrives at school, not just in class but also in co-curricular activities like skating. This is a clear indication that we are our own limit. If we set our minds to do great things, we sure will.
Lauren joins professional bodybuilding at a much older age of forty as compared to most of the other ladies who were a bit younger than her. This may have been a hindrance to most people who may feel out of place, but it doesn’t stop Lauren from doing exceptionally well and achieving her dreams.
The book has plenty of pictures that make one feel a real connection with Lauren. It was really delightful seeing her as a child and an adult, and with her loved ones. The pictures were an additional source of inspiration and the transformation was very captivating. Her victories and wins were an important source of motivation. There were plenty of workbooks that really helped me to better understand and think critically through the series.
I did not see any downside. The book was exceptionally well-edited.
Based on all these, I give this book a 4 out of 4 rating. The book was really inspiring to read, getting to know Lauren on a very whole new different level and setting. Through the book, I got to learn plenty about personal empowerment and the inner champion in me. This wasn’t just about Lauren, it was about me as well. To add to that, there were no spelling or grammatical mistakes that I came across.
I would recommend this book to anyone that may have questions about what their purpose is, those that feel like they aren’t living their life right or fully and perhaps need a little push. Beneath the Muscle will give you the push you need. Through this book, I hope you will define your path clearer.
