Review of Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (Japanese Edition)
Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (Japanese Version) a literature and non-fiction work by a renowned author Peter Liptak, is a collection of at least 300 English idioms and their Japanese translations that are used daily today. Within the pages of this beautiful book, readers will find the most frequently used idioms or phrasal expressions with meanings in both English and Japanese languages. The author arranges the book into twenty-five chapters to allow the reader to jump into the particular theme that they want. For most definitions, literal meanings have been provided and used in sentences and stories to further the reader's understanding.
Peter suggests that the book can be used as a learning material for various reasons. First, the book contains phrases or idioms with their meanings and examples used in a sentence. Secondly, each chapter is followed by a story utilizing all the sayings and some practice questions to test the learner's understanding. The stories are adapted to be available to readers yet challenge them with the application of language. Finally, there are additional discussion questions to incite the deeper critical thinking of the learner about the themes raised in the story or the use of the phrasal expressions themselves. Although idioms can be challenging to comprehend, the book makes them as simple as possible to fit the grammatical structure.
The author applies a descriptive writing style, one tailored for teaching and learning. In the 25-chapter series, the author covers almost all the most used idioms giving the meanings in English and Japanese. The translations help the Japanese readers further their English understanding by using the sentences and stories provided. Also, a person learning the Japanese language can benefit from it as well. Idioms are a very complex set of vocabulary, but thanks to Peter Liptak, the idioms can be easily understood because he explains the complexities of grammar in a straightforward language. Another positive aspect of this book is that it is easy to read with many examples and clear illustrations for emphasis. The used style is perfect when the book is used as a learning resource material.
Nonetheless, the author's application of the English and Japanese translations simultaneously creates a discordant flow for an English reader creating a lack of flow as the learner reads on. Also, Peter doesn't arrange the idioms in an alphabetical order which would take a user a lot of time to locate an expression.
I highly recommend this book to an individual looking forward to learning the Japanese language much quickly. Also, it's an excellent classroom textbook, reference guide, or a supplement for other books. It's also a perfect book for an English learner who has been struggling with verbs and idioms to read and understand better. Regardless of their age, race, religion, and ethnicity, any person will find this book very beneficial in learning a new language.
Since the positives outweigh the negatives, I, therefore, give this book a four out of four-star rating. The book was perfectly edited, and I found no grammatical mistakes, no vulgar language used, or sexual scenes in the book. It portrays clear illustrations and writing skills, and I'd recommend this book for a read.
