Review of The Drug-Free Sleep Solution: The Four-Week Program for Overcoming Insomnia Using Cognitive Behavioral Therap
The Drug-Free Sleep Solution: The Four-Week Program for Overcoming Insomnia Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy written by David Durocher, is about insomnia and changing thought patterns and behavior. This is a 4-week program that purports to follow specific techniques such as meditation and exercise to solve sleeping irregulates. Author, David Durocher, claims that the psychotherapeutic treatment called cognitive behavioral therapy, (CBT) can change sleeping patterns.
The Drug-Free Sleep Solution: The Four-Week Program for Overcoming Insomnia Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy begins by defining insomnia and its influence on our health as well as productivity levels. There are many drugs such as Xanax given to patients for insomnia but Durocher believes that CBT-1 is more effective than these drugs. To monitor your sleep patterns Durocher suggests using a sleep diary to record your sleep activities. Avoiding energy drinks at night and eating the right foods, are required to maintain good sleep hygiene. Durocher gives instructions on various breathing techniques and visualizations which have already been proven by other experts to be excellent relaxation techniques.
This book is very direct and easy to understand. Facts are referenced to verify that the author has done some research. There are no spelling errors and the book is edited which is its only saving grace since its contents are dull and vague. I have read this all before, eating well, reducing stress, and exercising are advised for almost all mental issues, so to the author I say, "thanks Captain Obvious".
Durocher studied business and psychology at university but he is not a qualified psychologist or doctor to have the expertise and medical knowledge to write this book. The author also poorly tries to connect religion, specifically Christianity into ways of reducing stress. The author is Christian and quotes passages from the bible to reiterate why God can help reduce stress and improve mental health. Quoting the bible seems unnecessary and unrelated to the topic of insomnia. I do not like the layout of the book. Certain lines were needlessly placed in bold text. If you refer to chapter 2, the book lists symptoms of depression. It is easier to read if the various symptoms were numbered and spaced sufficiently without being in bold writing. I would prefer that the author does in-line referencing with names instead of numbers. The reference list is not long and it is easier to match names to the reference list.
I rate this book 1 out of 4 stars because Durocher is unqualified to be advising anyone on a mental illness. There is no mention of Durocher possessing a Ph.D. or any other qualification to make him an expert in the field. The book would appeal to those suffering from insomnia but I suggest purchasing a book written by someone who has the right credentials. This book is more like a high school essay on stress and I personally would not want to take any advice on a very serious condition from a high school student.
