I've always wanted to be a doctor. One of the things I thought I would bring to the practice was a medical encyclopedia. I imagined a book that everyone would refer to when making decisions on what to eat, what to drink, what to avoid, and how to live. This book, Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks by Morton E. Tavel, is the closest one I've read to what I envisioned.

The book contains well-researched ideas on how to improve, protect and maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is divided into three parts, one that deals with tips for healthy living, another that deals with the myths in health care, and a final one that talks about the tricks for better living at lower costs. In a collection of 62 chapters, the author covers issues ranging from allergies, weight loss, hypertension, and medical conspiracy theories. The author isn't afraid of controversy; she expertly covers controversial health issues without being dismissive like most experts do. Each chapter of the book can be read independently as each contains specific information.

We live in a world where misinformation is prevalent , and research has shown that false information sells faster than correct information. It has actually become harder to tell right from wrong in almost all aspects. I absolutely loved that this author made it his duty to explain his position on several issues, backed up with scientific explanations, and made rational conclusions. I'm glad the author clarified and filtered personal opinions, facts, and unconfirmed findings. This clarity made the book more authentic. I have to admit that I realized I was doing many things wrong, e.g., whether to take breakfast or not; I've been on the wrong side all this time.

I enjoyed reading the book as it was not only short but also easy to read. The language the author used was simple and easy to comprehend. He minimized the use of jargon that is usually common with medical books. I also loved the author's references to his previous work to drive home some messages. There was nothing negative I could point out in the book.

I give the book a perfect rating of four out of four stars. The book was well-written and well-researched. It was professionally edited as I encountered very few errors. I'd describe it in one phrase as a health manual and therefore recommend it to everyone. Health enthusiasts would particularly enjoy this one.
