Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer’s Guide by William H. Coles is a concise informational guide that goes over the meanings of various terms regarding writing fiction. It is straightforward and does not meander. The guide is 128 pages long and it's great for any stage of the craft both for professional and hobby writers.

As I read the guide, I was interested in brushing up on the various terms and what they mean in practice. I am a hobby writer myself and it was a useful book to read. It was succinct and read a lot like a dictionary. You get the term and the meaning. It's simple. That was good about this guide.

As far as such guides go, this is not meant to teach you how to write. This is meant to teach you about various elements of writing fiction. It's a technical manual, of sorts. It does provide details and examples as well as exercise ideas which are extremely useful to go along with the explanations of the different terms. Personally, I learned a lot of new things and remembered things I had forgotten.

As far as the reading experience goes, it was not engaging or funny or food for thought like many other guides to writing can be. I do not remember the title nor the author, but I've read a guide to writing that made me laugh out loud like a comedy novel. Again, that is not a bad thing. This guide is technical and that is very useful especially for beginner writers.

This book is a great place to start if you want to learn about creative writing. I would recommend this guide to beginner writers who want to learn about the various elements of writing and what makes up a story. I'd also recommend it to any writer who would enjoy going back to the basics and brushing upon them.

It is a very informative and educational guide and I enjoyed reading it hence I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. There is nothing about the book that I disliked. Everything was what it claims to be and I appreciate that.

If you are not looking for an informative read then you might want to skip on this guide. If you want to learn and brush up or don't know where to start, then this is a good starting point for new writers.
