Gardening With Guns is a beautiful memoir by AJ Wootton. The story is centered on overcoming childhood trauma and finding happiness. The central characters are; Matt, Cameron, Jay and Kirk. Amber takes the reader on a journey through her challenges, achievements and hidden dark secrets. This memoir consists of Amber as the central character, who narrates her childhood trauma of being sexually assaulted by her mother’s boyfriend. Amber elaborates on her mental state during her parent’s divorce. Amber battles to accept the death of her father because he committed suicide. After the death of her father, Amber begins to re-look at her childhood and current marriage in order to reach happiness in the end. She begins to recall events she had blocked out.

The character description was excellent because it gave a clear background of the characters. The sequence of events was composed well because the story did not lose focus. There is a general perception that memoirs are boring however this was not the case with Gardening With Guns. I personally found the book to be relatable but at the same time, the problems that this memoir elaborates on are current day issues. There was not too many characters to follow therefore this was a simple book to read.

In all honesty, there wasn’t a single aspect in this book that I did not dislike. The memoir does contain sexual content and profanity but this did not impact my appreciation for this beautiful memoir. There are several themes incorporated into this memoir, such as; happiness, forgiveness and love. I personally felt that these themes contribute to making this book appeal to a large audience.

I did not find any errors in this book. There was no grammatically errors hence I will give this book 4 out of 4 stars. When I read this book, I did not find any flaws in its plot, characterization, spelling errors and the narration of this story. Gardening With Guns is probably one of my favorite literal works because it not only narrates story of a women who faces her past and current struggles but also reaches out to the current audience.

I recommend this book to every young adult or married individual because this memoir holds important life lessons. This novel takes you through the journey of the central character Amber and her life. I caution future readers that some of the content is mildly upsetting and heart shattering yet a beautiful memoir.
