Review of The Successful Manager
Have you ever been a manager before? Do you want to be a great manager? If yes, how would you rate your performance? In the book, The Successful Manager, written by James Potter and Mike Kavanagh, they examines practical approaches to building and leading high-performing teams. In the book, the authors have tried to explain to us the basic characteristics that we need to acquire to become great managers and leaders.
In the book, the authors have tried to show us the little characteristics that distinguish great managers from the rest. These include communication, feedback, transparency and adaptability, just to name but a few. Great managers are clear communicators. They do not over communicate or under communicate. They try as much as they can to know their employees at a personal level. In the organization, they share as much information as they can with their subordinates so that they too can feel part of the team. Great managers offer constructive feedback. The book also explores some problems faced by the new managers just after being promoted. This may be the feeling of being unworthy of taking that position and that someone else would be better suited for it. The book provides such insight into how to deal with the problem.
While reading the book, I most enjoyed the lessons that I learnt, such as;to be a good manager, the key thing you need is the desire, and that you do not need to be the most knowledgeable person in the group to lead. I also learnt that every great manager occasionally has doubts about how they are leading the team. I liked the fact that the book talks about the salient challenges that are not mostly talked about, such as how to go about it when you want to terminate an employee and also how to adjust when dealing with different employees in your team. More importantly, I liked how the book was arranged, with each title indicating a new topic of discussion.
The only thing I disliked about the book was the fact that, somehow, the authors were beating around the bush by giving too many explanations instead of getting straight to the main points.
I would give this book a 4 out of 4 stars rating. This is because it was professionally edited and, hence, I did not find any spelling or grammatical errors. There is also no use of profane language. I would recommend this book to both adults and teenagers who have the desire to be successful leaders or Managers.
