One of the goals I had for myself at the beginning of this year was to learn some new languages. With so much zeal and determination, I started working towards that goal. I wished to be able to converse in those languages. However, what I found out is that most resources that I came across tended to teach the languages in their proper and formal form. In reality, the owners of these languages speak in slang and idioms. They tend to use phrases that are not usually taught in the materials but are common among native speakers. I found out that learning a new language and attaining the ability to connect to a particular people requires much more than learning a plethora of new words and memorizing vocabulary. Understanding and knowing how to use each word is also a necessity.

Getting well acquainted in a language one chooses to learn is very important because conversing with a man in a language he understands gets into his head but talking to him in his language, touches his heart. The fastest way to get acquainted with such a language is by learning the idioms or slang of said language. Idioms show how individuals who communicate in a particular language think and get realities. It likewise gives a feeling of the sorts of choices such individuals would make on explicit issues. Idiom Attack Vol. 1: Everyday Living (Japanese Edition) is a book that aims at acquainting readers with idioms that are commonly used by native speakers of the English language. In twenty-five themed sections, about three hundred of the most widely used expressions for life are discussed in English and translated into Japanese. These themes cover various parts of day-to-day existence treated in the book; from inconsequential to critical occasions.

Idiom Attack Vol. 1: Everyday Living (Japanese Edition) was written by Peter Liptak, Matthew Douma and Jay Douma. Peter Liptak is an English teacher and writer, Matthew Douma is an English Education Consultant and author of English Educational material while Jay Douma is an elementary school teacher. The translations were made by Caroline Yuko Omura Eddis who is working as a translator and interpreter of English, Japanese and French languages.

The information in this book is of golden value. I love that the book was written in a very simple way that makes it suitable for personal study. It can also be comfortably used as study material for an official class setting. The Japanese translations come immediately after the English versions. The authors also provided story lessons and exercises that would help readers comprehend the lessons better and I think this is highly commendable.

There was nothing to dislike about the book. It is well structured and easy to comprehend. It was exceptionally well edited as I came across no grammatical errors. Taking the excellence of this work into account, I give the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to any English speaker, who knows the basics of the Japanese language and is looking to improve on the conversational use of the language, and vice versa.
