Reading a motivational book might be daunting as sometimes they are written in a way that the reader ends up unsure of what to take out of the book however this was not the case with Beneath The Muscle, Unleash Your Inner Champion by Lauren Powers as she takes us on simple yet not easy steps on how to unleash our inner champion. Lauren starts by telling us her journey from childhood where she shows us that she was not born in a rich family however she was raised with love which gave her the freedom to be the best version of herself. She further tells us about where she started on her career, from being a sales lady to having her surfing school which was doing well until she made wrong decisions and lost her business, and how she broke into bodybuilding at the age of 40. Entering a male dominant industry and at such an old age sounds absurd right, however, she made it as she believed in herself and was full of determination. In this book beneath the muscles, she tells us about some of the things she struggled with like alcohol and cocaine abuse, how she decided to clean up and pick up the pieces. She shows us the importance of doing something you are passionate about, forming habits and self-discipline, it’s about taking care of your inner and outer self.

People often use being bullied as a reason why they could not achieve certain things however I like Lauren's mindset, she shows us that the bully is often closing a certain gap in their lives and it's never the victim's fault which fuelled her to not want to fit in, always be different and not allow being bullied to be the reason she can't achieve her dreams. She again show us that she did not wake up one day and was a 10-time heavyweight bodybuilding champion, she had to make sacrifices as well and her spirit of perseverance had brought her to where she is. I also appreciate that she acknowledges that it's not easy to make turnaround decisions or start new habits however it's doable as long as you take the first step. I would like to praise Lauren for how she told her story with the reader in mind as she used simplified language to explain everything. It’s not about finding a new formula however reinventing ourselves to use the power within to achieve what we desire. The quotes and pictures used in the book give a personal touch while reading the book.

I agree the book cover gives the reader the perception that it’s about bodybuilding which I also did the first time I saw it however as they say never judge a book by its cover, this book is a powerhouse where Lauren talks about topics such as being true to yourself, never giving up, finding your why and others with reflection to her life journey as well. The best thing is when referring to herself she is not boasting, it’s more like she is making a connection with the reader to say “I have been there, I know it”. The reflection workbook at the end of each chapter which readers can download for free shows her sincerity and honesty in wanting to help the reader.

I would recommend the book to people who need some motivation and inspiration and also those who think it's too late to start or change their career, this book will give a different perspective and intrigue the will-power within.

I also liked that the book was divided into parts, this makes it easier to go back and refer to should the need arise at a later stage. Going through the book I didn't feel like I was reading a book rather having a one on one consultation with someone who understands what am going through. I Am rating this book a well-deserved 4 out 4 stars as the book was well written, professionally edited, and impactful.
