Presently, we are living in an ultra-competitive world, which expects us to focus our energies on achieving success in every walk of life. But despite our best efforts, some of us end up being more successful than others. I have often wondered why and finally found the answers behind achieving professional and personal success in life, in this book How To Be Successful: Think Like A Leader by M. Curtis McCoy.

A short non-fiction read, the book is an extension of the author’s blog titled ‘Success, Motivation and Inspiration’ which he launched after surviving a difficult period in his life. A successful, young entrepreneur, the author’s life completely changed when he was diagnosed with an aggressive brain cancer. Yet, instead of giving up on life, he fought back and chose to help others through his blog and this book. It centres around explaining the key principles that an individual should follow to achieve success. The importance of principles like developing winning habits, saying no to others, etc. have been highlighted through the use of anecdotes from the author’s life. Alongside, the book also contains structured interviews with highly successful personalities from the United States of America.

As I constantly struggle to make the best use of my skills, I found the book to be an illuminating read. The author’s honest description of how he learned from some of his mistakes made it relatable to me. I also loved that the interviews in the book featured a diverse range of personalities, from an ex-US Navy sniper to a famous technology developer. It was fascinating to note that though all the personalities included in the book had diverse skill sets, their work ethic and value systems remained largely the same. Another unique feature of the interviews is that every interviewee has listed some books that have influenced them throughout their life. Consequently, this has led to me adding numerous new books to my ‘To be Read’ list.

On the downside, many of the answers given by the interviewees are extremely long and can cause the reader’s attention to drift from the book. I feel the book could have had a deeper impact on the reader’s psyche if these had been made crisper. Also, though the content of the book has been presented innovatively, the keys to success mentioned in it are like those in other self-help books. For these reasons, I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.

However, the book is still an insightful read. I would recommend it to anyone struggling to make an impact in their profession or looking to start their own business.
