Review of Fouling in Business and College Athletics
Fouling in Business and College Athletics by Gonzalo Fernandez reveals unethical and fraudulent practices that take place in business and college athletics. The book is divided into two parts .i.e. fouling in the business world and fouling in college athletics respectively. Fouling in business takes place mainly in accounting practices of the business and in sports when money is involved.
In the corporate world, positive progress is misleading and unlawful as the accountants “cooks” the books in “accounting abracadabra”. The writer noted the inequalities in sports, for example, where no compensation is given to college athletes from the billions of dollars earned from broadcasting their games. The only people that benefit are the coaches, sponsors and broadcasters from the sponsorships and not the players themselves.
The book gives very strong cases of scandal and fraudulent stories that took place while the writer was working at International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation (ITTC). He used actual examples from newspaper articles, business and sports news’, business journals and court proceedings of fraudulent issues. The examples are very practical and keeps the reader glued and captivated. The author Gonzalo Fernandez also included the Acts that were incorporated to try and deal with the fouling in business and sports.
The author’s main reason for writing the book was to show that such fraudulent activities in business and sports can be reduced and are subject to revelation and some changes can be done. The corrupt practices can be abolished if all organizations work together and adhere to some rules and regulations and the auditors will do their jobs properly and not be misled by money.
I loved how the book unfolded all the business practices that people thought are normal and acceptable yet some very unethical practices will be happening. The book Fouling in Business and College Athletics showed that there is fouling taking place almost everywhere, even in the least expected places, where money is involved. On the other hand, the book contains some very technical accounting terms and athletic jargon which were hard to grasp.
Overall, this is a good book and will definitely recommend it to my colleagues and for that i rate it 4 out of 4 stars . The book will be suitable, not only for those who love business news and are into sporting activities but also those that are not into business and sports as it enlightens everyone on the unethical practices that takes place in business and sports.
