Review of Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (German Edition)
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart”. This is a popular quote by the renowned Nelson Mandela. Indeed, there is great beauty in the diversity of languages and it is even more beautiful when people try to connect to other people by learning their language. Personally, I love learning about other cultures and languages. The best way to connect to another man’s culture is to learn the idioms of that culture. Idioms offer cultural understandings into societal principles, values and beliefs. It gives insight to the lifestyle of the people and the kind of judgments they tend to make.
Idiom Attack Vol. 1: Everyday Living (German Edition) is a book that presents a collection of about 300 idioms with the aim of helping readers understand the figurative expressions used by Northern Americans in everyday speech and writing. Besides the German edition, it is also available in some other languages and editions. The book was brought to being as a result of the combined efforts of Peter N. Liptak who is a teacher and writer of language acquisition books, Matthew Douma who works as an English education consultant and as an author of English educational materials and Jay Douma who is an elementary school teacher. The book was translated by Angela Basteri who has a Master of Education degree in German literature. It was also edited and proofread by people of the German origin.
Idiom Attack Vol. 1: Everyday Living (German Edition) is structured in a way that makes it appropriate for various applications. It can be used as a study material for a study group or for personal study. It can also be used as a lesson tool for intermediate and advanced classroom applications. The book contains 25 chapters. Each chapter tackles a particular theme which is based on normal human activities like shopping, traffic, housework, relationships and human interactions. There is a list of about ten to fifteen idioms in each chapter as it relates to the theme being discussed. There is a story in each chapter which helps the readers to see the contextual usage of the idioms discussed in that chapter. Also, there are exercises at the end of each chapter to evaluate the reader.
What first stood out to me in Idiom Attack Vol. 1: Everyday Living (German Edition) was the message of dedication. The dedication part of a book is usually not a very significant aspect, but for this book, the dedication page is what made me instantly fall in love with the book and that is why I thought to mention it here. I think it was written with so much passion and finesse. Besides this, I appreciate that the German translations were not far-fetched from the English versions. The answers to test questions are also very close to the tests. These helped my comprehension of the lessons and I could flow better because of these features.
There is nothing to dislike about the book. It is well crafted, easy to understand and well edited. I found it very beneficial to my journey of enhancing my German speaking skills. I can also say that the book was professionally edited because I found no errors. Because of these, I give the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to people who know English language and are already familiar with the basics of the German language, but find it challenging to use the language in conversational terms and vice versa.
