Beneath the Muscle by Lauren Powers is an inspiration-filled book based on the life and experiences of the author. By peeling back the layers of her success as a bodybuilder and entrepreneur, the author shows her vulnerable side and speaks on the experiences that made her who she is. Her constant plight between masculinity and femininity coupled with the trials she went through growing up comes together to build the present-day narrative of her life. The author provides ample knowledge and wisdom to ensure that people become successful through her experiences and struggles. This book touched on various present-day issues such as addiction, bullying, and prejudice.

This book was a great read and provided much-needed insight into my own daily life. One of the many messages of the book was one of strength in femininity. The author performed in a male-dominant sport and still exhibited female empowerment. Not only does this book empower, but it also holds a meaningful message to anyone that was able to read it.

Secondly, the author’s journey was relatable and personal, making me more susceptible to what she was saying. She is a human and experienced the joys and tragedies of humanity. Regardless of her experiences, she continued to rise through the ranks with great determination to be where she is. The book stressed hard work and dedication as the key to success which spoke to me. Along with these methods, commitment and the idea that we should not limit ourselves to the circumstances we find ourselves in also speak volumes to the sheer determination of the author.

Finally, the author never shied away from the simple fact that we cannot carry the world on our shoulders alone. She stressed the need to ask others for help sometimes and argued that it is not a weakness but a strength. I enjoyed the author’s use of pictures throughout the book as it felt more personal and made the book more interesting. Lastly, the author made it clear that when looking at who you are, the best question that you can ask yourself is why, which I found to be a powerful message. Why you do the things that you do makes you who you are.

I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I did not find anything negative within this piece. I found no errors within the book, and it was well-written and put together nicely. This book was an inspirational read. Using relatable quotes and a personalized story allowed the author to engage the reader and provided some much-needed advice. As a young adult on the verge of graduating from University, the thoughts littered through this memoir stuck with me. The whole idea of peeling back your façade to fully understand who you are as a person has burrowed its way into my heart.

I would recommend this book to individuals 12 and up. Not only is the writing understandable for younger people, but it also provides ample information that I would have liked to know at that age. Adults who are looking for the key to success would also enjoy this book. I would also recommend this book to women who want to pick a unique path in life but are afraid of breaking societal standards.
