This intriguing piece of literature from the mind of M. Curtis McCoy is quite an interesting read, in that it is like no other book I have come across in this genre. How to be Successful approaches success as it truly is, a subjective measure of certain parts of someone’s life. Through interviews with influential and successful people, McCoy shows that success looks different to everyone and answers questions about how these people got to where they are now. This book also includes chapters on specific topics such as the importance of delayed gratification, improving your attitude, how to develop winning habits, and many other helpful tips. This book is especially impactful because the author chooses to look past the conventional view of success as simply monetary, and instead takes things such as spiritual health into account as well.

This in particular is my favorite part of this book overall. I think in society today, the masses have diminished success to something that can only be achieved via financial success. It was refreshing to see a book that wrote of success as something that included taking care of yourself spiritually, physically, and emotionally. I also appreciate the comfortable way that the interviews are written, with stories and jokes included, because it helps the reader to feel bonded with the interviewee.

With that said, I do feel like this book had more tips on how to build up yourself on a personal journey towards being successful, and less about the practicality of how to actually get there and what to do after you reach that point. I would have loved to see a few more chapters on things someone could apply to their life to get their family out of poverty for example. Though as I said before, this book is amazing at taking a more generalized look at success.

For this reason, I would rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. It appears to be professionally edited, and honestly, it is one of the best books I have read in the “success chasing” genre.

I would recommend this book to any number of people. People who are struggling to make it in the world can apply some of the pieces of advice in this book to get further in life. Also, those who have already “made it” in a sense, can read this book to be reminded that the true successes are not found in the almighty dollar.
