Surviving the Business of Healthcare is a comprehensive insight into the medical world from the perspective of Barbara Galutia Regis, M.S., PA-C. This book gains its authenticity on the subject from the fact that the author is a 4th generation family practice provider and a recent cancer patient. As such she has seen both sides of the coin and her claim to provide the readers the power of knowledge is nothing but the truth.

The author describes her life journey from being the daughter of a physician in the 1970s up to her 20 plus years of experience as a physician assistant in this short and crisp book. She guides us through the healthcare business by providing information on the importance of the right PCP, health insurance decisions, rights of patients, and how to save money in drugs and hospital admissions. She has discussed in detail the various problems encountered by patients and their families such as cost of hospital admission, cost of drugs, legal issues in healthcare and provides the solutions as well in form of her advice and in-depth understanding of all the matters about health.

Barbara Galutia has given a concise yet comprehensive discussion of issues faced by all, day in and day out in clinics and hospitals. She also writes about the political and business aspect of healthcare in a very non-critical manner and gives solutions also, to the problems. She is a strong supporter of patients advocating for themselves and boldly proclaims that second opinions are to be encouraged for benefit of the patient. She has provided her insight and knowledge about the profession in a beautiful manner which will help the reader to make the correct healthcare decisions.

I was lucky to get a chance to read and review this book as this information is very new and helpful to me despite me being a doctor. The sections about the medical practice in older days make me want to go back in time. Each time when you read “a glimpse into our not-so-sleepy town”, you know a nostalgic treat awaits you. The author has shared her personal experiences in sections about overinflated drug costs in a local pharmacy, elder abuse, and bankruptcy of families brought about by costs of medical emergencies. Also, her description of health insurance evolution in the US to its political and economical aspect is worth reading and my favorite part of the book.

The initial chapters of the book may give you an impression that it is more suited for US citizens, but as you continue reading it you realize that no matter from which part of the world you are, the general advice and guidance from this expert will help you. There are no grammatical mistakes or typing errors that I encountered. This book is free from any sort of violence and profanity.

I would rate the book 4 out of 4 stars as it is undoubtedly what it claims – a unique perspective from a healthcare provider and patient. This book will act as a guide to people of all age groups and nationalities. So, read and book and enjoy “best of health”.
