Review of Beneath the Muscle
Are you looking for a complete person who has it all? Meet Lauren Powers. She is a multi-talented bodybuilder, actress and a model. She has won the heavyweight bodybuilding category ten times in her career.
Beneath the muscles: unleash your inner champion, is a book written by Lauren Powers. She describes herself as a woman filled with passion and determination. She is always willing to learn and improve on herself every day. In addition, she has a burning desire to inspire others and help them in any way she can.
Her experiences in different career paths have been her main source of knowledge. Just like any other human, she has experienced the highs and lows of life. She recounts the low moments that made her cry a lot. In elementary school, she was bullied and ostracized due to her poor eyesight. After buying eyeglasses, the bullying never stopped and she was called names. As soon as she started using alcohol and drugs, addiction followed. She found herself so deep into addiction that her life could not function without alcohol and drugs.
In her forties, she met a life-changing opportunity and she embraced it. Though she was new to it, she jumped into bodybuilding and made big steps. She even won an overall title from three different categories. Winning was much easier because she always looked for new challenges. At the same time, she also surrounded herself with people who were ready to help her. This proves that success will always be easier if we position ourselves in the right places and with the right people.
What I love about this book is how the writer positions herself in life. The positive mindset that kept her winning all the way. She goes ahead and says she doesn’t believe she had any special gift or talent for bodybuilding. What she had was the tremendous power of intent, coupled with the willingness to ask for help. A willingness to be a beginner. A willingness to leave it all on the stage even if it meant falling flat on her face. In all she does, she always gives her best. The writer was able to balance her classwork and excel even though school tours took much of her time. Another aspect that I love about this book is how the writer always gets herself out of problems. When she got addicted to alcohol and drugs, she sought help and finally got out of it.
Despite all the encouragement in this book, I think it is slightly misleading. Not everyone can function the same as Lauren Powers and she does not mention that people are different. The writer makes it look so easy to pull yourself out of problems.
This book was exceptionally edited and the language used in this book is simple and clear. In regards to this, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.
I recommend this book to young adults who are trying to find themselves. This book acts as a guide when exploring life and trying to be the best.
