Idioms as used by particular countries and languages are figurative statements that tend to show-off a nation’s lifestyle, beliefs and culture. They make up the interesting and idiosyncratic aspect of each language. Idioms generally reflect the way a people who speak a particular language think and how they understand facts. It also gives off an idea of the kind of judgments such people would give on specific matters.

Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (French Edition) is a book produced by the combined efforts of Peter Liptak who is an English teacher and writer, Matthew Douma, who is an English Education Consultant and author of English Educational material, and Jay Douma, an elementary school teacher. The translations were made by a United States-based French citizen, named Marie-Odile Kippen. The book presents a collection of about three hundred idioms that are applicable in our everyday lives and activities. These idioms are translated to the French Language.

Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (French Edition) proves to be very resourceful to an English speaker who is trying to enhance his or her French speaking skills and vice versa. The book is organized into a series of 25 chapters that tackles common matters as it pertains to our everyday living including human interactions, making conversations, housework, family matters, social invitations, holidays, etc. Each chapter contains a story that expresses the use of the idioms taught in that chapter and exercises that tests the reader’s ability to comprehend and use the idioms learnt in the context of full sentences. Breaking the book into chapters of specific themes makes it easy for a reader to quickly make references depending on the situation at hand and I really appreciate this about the book.

The French translations of the idioms come immediately under the English versions, likewise the answers to the exercises and comprehension tests. This helped me flow with the lessons and comprehend better, and I liked this about the book. The book is structured in a way that makes it have a broad range of possible applications. It can be used as a teaching aid for a classroom, it can be used in a study group and it can also be used for personal studies.

I did not particularly dislike anything about the book. In fact, the contents of the book exceeded my expectations. I found it very precise and useful in improving my vocabulary and enhancing my French speaking skill. Also, the book is easy to read and understand, and it is well edited as I found no grammatical or typographical errors. For these reasons, I give the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend the book to anyone who understands English and is looking to improve his or her French speaking skill or one who understands French and is looking to improve his or her English speaking skill.
