Review of Living Abroad: Challenging the Myths of Expat Life
Living Abroad: Challenging the Myths of Expat Life written by Jim Santos is an even deeper explanation of the expat life. He shows many examples of myths and misconceptions people have about the life of an expat. He shows what parts of it are true and what parts of it are false. He shows us how we can use our common sense in real life, and how to apply it. Even though it is mostly about Ecuador, there are still many aspects that can apply to expat life anywhere in the world.
I loved reading this book. At first, I thought it was just going to be a book about living abroad – little did I know that I was going to learn many valuable lessons and insights. Jim also wrote the book with a sometimes sarcastic tone which I loved – it is right up my alley. It was sarcastic in a funny, joking way, and it still got the point across. He did his research very well and gave the information clearly, and if he was not 100% sure about the information, he would mention that as well – I found this admirable and valuable.
Above all, I appreciated Jim’s frankness. He did not write this book to persuade anyone to become an expat. He also did not write the book to convince someone not to do it. He truly wanted to give you the best, clearest view of the life of an expat, and he did it so well. He gave all the information and left it up to you to make a decision.
Page 148 of the book shows us this by saying, “My goal was not to discourage you but not to encourage you either – just to provide a candid look at what it has been like for us.”
There is nothing about this book that I did not love; however, if I had to choose something ‘negative’ about the book, I would say that the timeline of the book was sometimes a bit confusing. However, this happened so little and it was not that confusing that it could be seen as an issue.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars because the book was funny and helpful. It gave a lot of information and advice and made you see things from a different view. It is definitely a book to read if you are considering moving abroad.
Are you considering moving overseas or know of someone who is? Do you want to learn about different kinds of people and different kinds of styles? Then you will greatly benefit from this book. Your life will become richer for reading about new people and their lifestyles and seeing the world from new perspectives.
