Author Barbara Galutia Regis PA-C shares her unique perspective as a Physician Assistant to shed light on the ins and outs of navigating the healthcare field in her book Surviving the Business of Healthcare. She also shares her personal experience as a patient because she was diagnosed with skin cancer while writing the book. She shared her very relatable habit of excuse-making when it came time to care for herself by getting an exam for the skin lesion on her arm. She intended to share information so that the reader can make more informed healthcare decisions for themselves and their family. Through scenarios, flashbacks to her early life, and other anecdotes, the author helps to share the world of medicine and the changes that have occurred that make healthcare even more difficult to navigate.

The author shares positive advice from both sides of the equation (physician and patient), helping to explain the importance of insurance and highlighting the benefits of catastrophic health insurance and health savings accounts (HSAs).

She also gives good advice on the importance of finding someone who listens to you and can be a caring partner in your healthcare needs. The author ensures that you understand that you are ultimately the best advocate for your health and gives some suggestions on keeping track of your medical history and prescription medications to be sure that all the medical professionals treating you have accurate information.

Also, while not a subject many want to think of, there is a section on living wills and how important those documents are to ensure that your wishes are known to your loved ones to save them some pain and anguish should a medical emergency occur.

The author also shares some great tips on prescriptions and how to find the best prices, even if it means not using your insurance, which may be very eye-opening for some!

While this book is an excellent primer on the various topics that one needs to be aware of when navigating their healthcare, the information is very brief for the most part and not comprehensive enough in some areas to offer much more than an overview. There are some areas where more information, questions, or a worksheet could be helpful to give the reader some real techniques or guidance to navigate their healthcare needs.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because it was an easy and quick read that offers practical tips and advice to those navigating the healthcare system. The only complaint is that in some areas, there were not enough details to be truly helpful in guiding the reader to some actionable advice.

The recommended audience for Surviving the Business of Healthcare would be anyone confused by the healthcare system and needs a beginning primer on where to start. The author gives a good overview of many topics that can help readers question the status quo and begin taking their healthcare options into their own hands.
