Review of Surviving the Business of Healthcare
"Medicine in the late ’60s, ’70s, and early ’80s as I experienced it was quite a different profession from what it is today. It was personal, and it was your life"(Regis 28).
The above lines written by Barbara Galutia Regis in her book Surving the business of healthcare : Knowledge is Power shows the real state of the business centered healthcare industry today and the way it has changed drastically from the old times. Having had years of experience in the healthcare industry working as a Physician Assistant herself, Regis has been successful in clearly pointing out the ways in which the industry has become corrupted and how it has forgotten its original mission, which was to serve the people and help them maintain and regain their health.
This book by the author is an informative guide to those who are seeking healthcare and those who might have to seek healthcare in the future. Even if you have no idea of how the modern healthcare industry works, Barbara Regis' work will help you move in the right direction. The author understands that people might be dazed and may not know what to do since a lot has changed in the industry from the time her father worked as a doctor. Thus, she provides them with all the information they would ever need while accessing healthcare, through her book. She provides glimpses into her own childhood and teenage years during which the healthcare professionals, including her father, cared more about serving people and helping them overcome grief and tragedy rather than profting out of them. The chapters in the book provide a detailed summary of the various factors and concepts one needs to be aware of while availing healthcare, ranging from choosing one's Primary Care Provider(PCP) wisely to understanding the legal sides of healthcare. It comprises of all the major steps and processes invloved in admitting a patient at a hospital, consulting the right doctors, choosing the right mode of treatment and even the processes after discharge from the hospital, including rehabilitation, finding home health and approaching caregivers for assistance. Each chapter is concerned with a specific step or process and this will help the reader to refer to a specific chapter in order to understand a specific process in future times of need.
One of the most positive aspects of the book which I really like is the diction and the ordinary language that the author has employed in the book. Instead of giving the readers a headche by filling the book with medical terms, the authors has given care to explaining such terms and processes in the simplest way possible. I also liked the fact that she included various scenarios and glimpses from her own life in each chapter which were related to the
specific process dealt with. Since the scenarios constituted of ordinary people like the readers, it enables them to understand the process better and know which decision to make if they are faced with a similar situation. The author's vast experience is one of the major factors which makes this book a useful and informative guide which can be easily grasped by the readers. Another aspect which needs appreciation is the way in which she dealt with topics like choosing the right health insurance and how to think carefully before choosing a drug which is shown in advertisements, etc.
One thing which I did not like in the book was the repetitive use of a single phrase- 'a glimpse into our not-so-loomy town'- which the author used whenever she wanted to talk about the healthcare system during her childhood and teenage years. Though the glimpses from her life which constituted of incidents which show how service-minded the healthcare professionals were back in the day, the repetitive use of the phrase in multiple chapters is something which the author could have avoided. I did not find any other negative aspects in the book.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars since the book is professionally edited. I could not find any grammatical errors in the work and I also like the fact that it is carefully put together,
and has given attention to each and every detail.
I would recommend this book to people of all ages and races, as I could not find any sort of profane language or racial usages in the book. The book is entirely informative and is a useful and proper guide to tackling the myth of the modern profit based healthcare industry.

You are right! It does provide a lot of information about the medical industry which is helpful for both patients and aspiring medical students alike.Emily_Jen wrote: ↑09 Jul 2021, 06:02 Through this book, the author provides invaluable insight on how a person can get better outcomes if guided properly through procedures like treatment and getting insurance. The book also explains various topics like choosing a PCP, making emergency plans, hospital admission, getting insurance, choosing pharmaceutical options, saving money, etc. I think this would be an important read for lots of people interested in medics and insurance.
