Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream For Peace is an exciting memoir about the life of Freedom Fighter, International Diplomat and Ambassador Dr. Ghoulem Berrah. It is a very motivating and mesmerising life story of his work towards peace.
Dr. Ghoulem Berrah was born in Aïn Beïda, a small town in the province of Constantine, in northeastern Algeria at the time when Algeria was annexed by the French. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah went to study in a medical school in France but ended up becoming an activist to fight for peace and became the co-founder of the Association Of North African Muslim Students and he became a part of the Algerian Revolution. However, this was just the first stair on the long staircase of his achievements.
The most remarkable thing about Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is that he had achievements in so many different fields. Many people do not achieve this and that's what makes him so interesting to read about. He worked as a physician in Morocco for the Ministry of Health. Afterwards, he worked as a researcher on the process of inhibition in DNA synthesis during his time in Indiana University. After receiving his PhD in the field of Microbiology from Indiana University in 1963, he went on to become a professor at Yale School Of Medicine. But that was not enough for him. So, in 1965, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah became an adviser to Côte d'Ivoire's Foreign Ministry. He was a very close advisor to President Félix Houphouët-Boigny and then the Ambassador till the president's death in 1993. He played a very important resolve the relationship between Israel and Palestine. He was also part of the Ivory Coast delegations to United Nations General Assembly. In 1966, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah was elected to the New York Academy of Sciences. Reading about all these events in detail is very fascinating.
There are no negative aspects of the book. One cannot find any aspect of the book that is not interesting. The book is properly dated and professionally edited making it easier to read, although it is a very long book having close to 600 pages but that is understood because of how adventurous Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's life was. The details and behind the scenes are written very well making this book even better. There are many photos to show the events making the book more interesting.
I would rate this book 4 out of 4. It is amazing to read about the journey of Dr. Ghoulem Berrah. There are many qualities to learn for him, the best being his ambitious nature. He would never give up easily. Reading everything he did in detail can make one understand the little details about his work towards peace.
I would recommend this book to everyone who likes reading biographies. People who enjoy history and specifically learning more about African history would thoroughly enjoy this book. However, this book is very long and requires a lot of patience and time.
