How to be successful has a very positive tone to it. The winning pitch for me is the central theme that you have control over how you want your happiness to turn out. The book stresses that preparation is key in every facet of life, the same way you have to go through a degree to be ready for a particular trade. It basically states that life has phases of preparation. M. Curtis McCoy in this book has also focused on key character traits such as self-discipline, restraint and self-control among others as the foundation for success.

The other thing I see as a plus in how to be successful is the way the author has included interviews and stories of different people to expound on various themes. Going through the book, you will be able to examine what different entrepreneurs define as success, what they value most in relationships, what advice they would give themselves if they were eighteen years old among many others.

Reading this book and the stories of the successful professionals and entrepreneurs featured, I was left to wonder why the author has not dedicated an equal amount to businesses or professionals that failed but surmounted those adversities. The author has put more focus on the traits that make one succeed while selectively excluding those that can lead to failure. Both success and failure are great teachers I believe. I would have expected to read stories of people who failed, mistakes they made, and how they can help others learn from that.

Having said that, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because of the way the book has presented the content in a clear understandable format. M. Curtis McCoy has also cleverly used his adversity and experiences when he was young to tell the story that anybody can succeed if only they can follow their passion. Having gone through traumatizing and life-threatening experiences, but came out of it victorious gives the book an encouraging tone.

This book is ideal for any entrepreneur who may be facing challenges and feels like giving up. I would recommend it to anybody who has a dream but is not sure how or whether he or she can be able to achieve it. It a testament that with proper planning and the right attitude, anybody can achieve whatever dream they have. It is a book that would be beneficial to young businesspeople or mid-level managers interested in career progression in leadership roles.
