A dream for peace by Ghoulem Berrah is a beautiful memoir that explores the life of Ghoulem Berrah, the author during the colonisation era where racism and discrimination was extremely constant. The story reveals how the author develops and desperately fights for his civil rights and those of his fellow Africans amidst the harsh environment he always found himself in from childhood to adulthood. The book brings to light the harsh reality of colonisation and the effects of it especially in Algeria, the home country of the author which was colonised by the French.

The book opens with the childhood memories of the author, he recounts his early childhood days through to his teenage years and finally his adult life. He described the city he was born in, Aïn Beïda, which was supposed to be a province but never became one because the city folk revolted against the local government after they thought they had been cheated in football, a game they held with utmost passion. He portrays to us his life during his days in school for formal education from Algeria to France where he made a promise to never study in Paris so chose to study in Bordeuax instead. Most of his movements against colonosation were born in Bordeuax when the fire to fight for his rights had burned to the brim. He was able to balance his learning and his movements for peace during his study, never forgetting one to do the other. His passion to help his fellow Algerians and other Africans who were stuck under the heavy hands of colonisation drove him to travel to places like Vietnam and America and to form various groups and to seek various ways to help achieve their common goal of Independence. A dream for peace does a good job of recounting both the struggles and the sweet moments Ghoulem Berrah had during his fight for the rights of his people and his country.

I really loved how Ghoulem Berrah touched on the culture and festivities of his country as well as the strong but fragile bonds that exist between humans. He never failed to tell us how he adored the cultural practices of his country and the various occasional festivities. The most intriguing relationship he wrote about in the book was the bond between his mother and him. He loved his mother so much that her death dealt a fatal blow to him. He also allowed us to witness the love his fellow country men and even other Africans showed him during their fight for their rights.

The book also portrayed a strong sense of patriotism and determination on the part of the author and those who were with him through out their fight. It is hard to say that the book has some major flaws, it definitely might have some flaws but they are not enough to prevent you from trying to read more till you get to the last page. He gave us a glimpse into his life as well as the major issues that arose in the colonosation era, the discrimination, the hate and the racism. Ghoulem Berrah also allowed us to see how some people driven from their love of their country were ready to lay their lives down for freedom without hesitation. The book is in a few words pure ecstaty.

I would rate this book four out of four stars for it’s rich flow of simple yet beautiful vocabulary. I would definitely recommend this book to you if you love some subtle comedy mixed with suspense and real life thrillers and action. The book entails everything you would look in a slice of life but on the other hand, this book might not be for you if you are very sensitive to sensitive societal issues and struggles.
