Review by Wildflower7297 -- Surviving the Business of He...
Surviving the Business of Healthcare by Barbara Galatia Regis, M.S., PA-C is a book that acts as a guide for how to advocate for yourself and get the best medical treatment and price. Regis is a physician’s assistant that has been working in the field for twenty years and has been a cancer patient herself with a rare form of nodular melanoma. Throughout this book, she shares her experiences both as a patient and a physician and how important it is to advocate for yourself, to get a second opinion, and to be informed about medical insurance. She offers numerous examples from her practice that support this advice.
In this tiny book, there is so much useful information that can benefit the everyday person. Regis describes the different levels of healthcare professions that can be very helpful to someone that is interested in joining the healthcare field and is not informed of the different options available. She also describes how she grew up watching her father build his practice from the ground up and how this led to her also becoming a physician. She emphasizes that the reason for her writing this book is to provide information to her readers so that we can learn how to make better healthcare decisions for our families. Healthcare in America is such a big concern for a lot of people right now and I feel like this book can help many people.
I don’t have anything negative to say about this book, however, I was baffled and horrified at some of the examples the author provided from her practice. She describes several instances where she was not the first physician this patient had seen and the patient was given no lab work or tests before they came to her and it turned out that they had a serious medical problem that could have already been diagnosed with lab work. This just further emphasizes her point about getting a second opinion and learning to advocate for yourself. This is not a book that I would have picked up on my own, but since I work in a hospital and work closely with nurses, I thought this would be an interesting read.
I rate Surviving the Business of Healthcare a 4 out of 4 stars. This book was surprisingly easy to read and easily accessible. I usually find non-fiction books to be super dry and overly packed with words and phrases that I couldn’t understand but this book did not have that problem whatsoever. The author’s use of her examples and insights was incredibly informative and helpful. I hope to use some of her advice going forward.
Due to the easily accessible way this book was written, I would recommend this book to anyone who is struggling to find the care they need. I would also recommend this book to anyone that would like to learn how they can save money while getting the best quality of healthcare for themselves and their families. This book has so much information that everyone who reads it will likely learn something new.
