Review by Almustapha Garba -- How To Be Successful
The book How To Be Successful: Think Like A Leader by M. Curtis McCoy, is a non-fictional book written based on personal experience. The author arranged interviews with successful individuals including himself from what they define success as, to the advice they'd give their 18-year-old-self. The author also included topics which he explained in a manner that could be understood by all, from the heading "what is your excuse", to "what happens when you become successful". The book comprises of methods one should take if being successful is one's goal. Topics explaining why one should practice delayed gratification, how to become an over-night success, keys to building quality friendship and other topics are all present in the book. The book is absolutely amazing; it encapsulates knowledge that could be acquired in many books in less than 200 pages.
I said it before and would say it again, "I am a fan of words of wisdom". The author took the liberty of providing readers with quotes from the Bible such as: Proverbs 17:9 (NIV), "Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends", and quotes by other individuals such as: "Getting rich is hard, but being poor was worse. Choose your struggle wisely", by M. Curtis McCoby.
I enjoyed reading chapter 19: "Don't let talent be your handicap" the most. The chapter provides a conversation between the author and his friend who happens to be "a natural". He described the friend as one of those people who don't have to go through stress or a long session of training in order to acquire anything or pass a test. The friend explained to the author why he thought that his talent could be a curse. This chapter in particular has a lot of inspiration to all who would read it.
The author also included names of books he and the other successful individuals saw as inspiration to them. Those books listed could also be an inspiration to us the readers, so we'd find our own routes to our own success.
There is something that surprised me though; the last part of the book where the author didn't provide any heading for the comments directed at the author. I don't know if it was intentional or not.
The book was professionally reviewed. From the knowledge I'd acquired, from the inspiration I'd gotten and from the advice I'd been provided with, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
I think the recommended audience for this book would be anyone interested in being a success.
