When the word 'risk' is mentioned, two words come to mind. These words are 'failure' and 'success'. This is because how risk is managed in any project, job, business, and company will determine the success of that project, job, business, and company. This is trite law. If all calculations have been made and every single piece of risk is dealt with before a project starts, then it is almost impossible for such a project to fail. Simple.

If you desire to learn the ins and outs of recognizing and managing risks in your company, or job, or your business, then Hot Spots by Douglas Brown is the book to read. Now this book does not and cannot substitute going to school to learn about risk management, neither can it replace textbooks on the subject matter. However, the quality of information that is contained in the 233 pages of this book is just too amazing to ignore. Hot Spot is a book that not only teaches how to manage risk, but it all teaches how to recognize risks. It teaches that every risk, no matter how small, has the potential of being extremely fatal to your project or business. This is why it is strongly advised that every single risk discovered is totally crushed or dealt with absolutely, even before you start your project. One of such ways of ensuring that is to ensure that terms and conditions of contracts are read in toto. Also, careful calculations must be done to ensure that the job given can be finished and delivered on the agreed date.

Although this book is simply beautiful and the lessons taught are simply priceless, there is a thing that I absolutely loved above all else and that is the assignments and exercises at the end of some chapters. These aren't mere exercises that will have you define terms explained in the book. No. There are tables, charts, and questions that test your understanding of the lessons taught. Then, they have you apply these lessons to your personal business. Some lessons involve reflecting on decisions that have been taken so far and deciding if those were the right decisions.

I could not find anything that I disliked about the book. That's the honest truth. I could fault neither the author nor this book. To me, it successfully passed across the lessons that it hoped to. These lessons were explained in a way that can be understood by laymen, it was professionally edited and it was a short read.

Now, I believe that this book is perfect in every way. Because that is the case, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. It deserves every single one of those stars. I strongly recommend this book to every manager, executive, and owner of companies and enterprises out there. This book teaches the most important lessons in successfully managing risks, lessons that all of the aforementioned persons must learn if they want to be successful in their respective businesses and endeavors.
