The Mindset by Ace Bowers

A janitor knocks up an academic and has to do right by her and their son. To achieve this he has to change his life by starting with the way he thinks. He goes from motel janitor earning minimum wage, all the way to big tech with multiple streams of income to provide for his growing family. It all began with changing the way he thought, changing The Mindset.

One thing I liked, or learned, is that as magical as it can be to change one's mindset, magic is practical and you have to take the steps toward your goal. You need a plan and an ability to navigate the hurdles, or curveballs that you come across. What I liked most was Mr. Bowers' work ethic and humility to start from the bottom and work his way to what he way, he reminds us that one has to earn it to deserve it; "The meek shall inherit the Earth."

The Mindset is a good book, however, the way he jumps between stories can a bit of a gnaw. For instance, in chapter 9 he's talking about his father and the chickenfeed, then he's drinking whiskey and talking with his mother on the phone with no sense of timeline - the way he uses his timeline is something to lookout for. Another criticism would be how all us put so much stock in other people, especially family, that when disappointed it can send one into a tailspin and even destroy their life, or prospects.

For once, the book chose me. I am at a place in my life where I need its lessons. Mr. Bowers found his moorings and steered his life in a chosen direction, and not swayed by other forces. An important takeaway from his life is that sometimes for some people what works is going backwards: if he waited to get his life together, then find a wife, then have a family, I would be talking about some other book and not this one. Purpose is always external.

I would rate this book a 3 out of 4, mainly because it goes straight to the point and the writer didn't feel the need to write a 400-page book to impress us, just what we needed to know and nothing more. A very good, lean body of work it is.
