Successful tech-company entrepreneur and millionaire living in Silicone Valley, and loving father, Ace Bowers reveals in his memoir The Mindset his unique rags-to-riches story that is simultaneously humble and inspiring. Bowers reveals honestly and emotionally a whole range of heavy issues that permeated his childhood. Abusing and neglectful parents, an absent brother perpetually incarcerated, missed chances and lessons in life. His childhood home is rife with trauma and daily fighting. With no positive role model to guide him in life, he flails in young adulthood. Life takes a turn for the worst when he reaches near-bankruptcy. Horrified at the prospect of becoming like the homeless people he sees on the street, he finds a way – he has to, when his girlfriend newly pregnant he chooses not to end up like his parents and signs on to work minimum wage as a janitor.

His deep exploration of his struggles during childhood and young adulthood is illuminating and will bring readers to action. Rather than express regret or victimise himself for his family's misfortunes, he shares a brilliant positive outlook on these things based on love and acceptance. The overall tone of the memoir is light and positive, in line with his life's motto. Some people close to him, like his brother and one of his best friends, took a downwards spiral and never managed to climb back up. Bowers could easily have ended up like those people, but his mindset and determination saw him through to where he is now.

The writing is crisp, well-edited and written in a way that is accessible and engaging for wide audiences. The format of this book is sectioned off into bite-sized chapters, which makes it easily digestible for busy people. But best still is the positive energy that runs throughout this recollection. Even though Bowers is objectively a “rich person”, he remains humble in his approach to life and viewpoint on success. He mentions that he “used to find success in materialistic things, like a fancy car or big house in a nice neighbourhood", but now feels successful “if my kids are happy and healthy—if my wife is there with me".

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Bowers' memoir and could not find any negative aspects to it – except maybe its short length!

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.

Recommended for everyone, specifically people looking for inspiration to continue working hard to achieve their own individual notion of success.
