Official Review: The Leading Edges: Leading From the Fron...
The Leading Edges: Leading from the Front, Back, Sides and Top to Bottom is a nonfiction book written by Dr. Tommy Ray Nash. Dr. Nash writes about many effective leadership skills and thoroughly explains how to apply them in different situations. This book is written in a textbook format and will appropriately complement a leadership course. Each chapter is dedicated to a different topic. Readers will gain extensive knowledge about leadership ethics, effective communication, emotional intelligence, motivational skills, team building, conflict management, and empowerment.
This leadership book stands out from the others because there is a section on effectively managing remote work during a global pandemic. He explains that production can decrease if employees are directly impacted by COVID-19. They may be stressed out about losing their jobs, worried about their family’s health, and can feel exhausted or depressed about adjusting to remote work. He explains the importance for leaders to have compassion and flexibility to effectively manage virtual teams. This information is useful for corporations, governments, small businesses, and schools undergoing virtual meetings.
Dr. Nash effectively includes examples of famous leaders and well-known companies to prove how different leadership skills are successful. These inspiring stories make this book more engaging because readers can see how companies, such as Amazon and Starbucks, successfully lead their employees. Although the case studies support the concepts in this book, he did not properly reference them.
I rate this book a 2 out of 4 because there are several grammar errors. What I liked least about this book is that there are complex sentences such as, “If the intent is for positive results, then listening must begin with paying attention to the entire content of the other person’s sharing.” Trying to understand what exactly the author is conveying, slows down the pace of the book. Many of these sentences can be written with better word choices. I would give this book a 3 out of 4 if these complex sentences were reworded or omitted.
What I liked most about this book is that the information provided can be applied in many different leadership positions. This book is not only for people in government or business. I recommend this book to readers who are interested in learning a variety of leadership skills. There are many different techniques that you can apply to your professional and personal life. I do not recommend this book to readers who do not enjoy reading college-level textbooks. There are tables, bullet points, and in-depth explanations of every concept introduced.
