Somebody once said that the things we are deprived of in our childhood days become our dreams as we grow up. This is exactly what happened to the author of the book, The Mindset, Ace Bowers. Ace had to endure a very harsh childhood, marred by poverty, parental fights and alcohol abuse. This resulted in the author forming a cocoon around himself as he noticed that there was something abnormal at his house. He became very defensive, always trying to cover up for his parents.

The Mindset is a memoir unravelling the drama which the author went through during his childhood. The things Ace was exposed to at a tender age had the potential to damage his self-image and consequently harm his psychological, spiritual and emotional well-being. However, events in Ace adult life set a new path for him, which resulted in him becoming the best Dad he could be to his children.

There are a lot of powerful life lessons we can get from Ace’s circumstances. The author points us to one powerful tool every person must desire to have – the overcomer’s mindset! A person has the power to choose a path different from that portrayed by either their parents or guardians. Parents or guardians are a child's first role models, and as such must endeavour to cultivate good standards for the child. Once an individual train his/her mind to be disciplined and not to lose focus on the desired goals, success becomes inevitable.

Another point to note is that of a supportive spouse. Ace found Yuka, who despite being from another race different from his, became like a God-sent angel. Yuka accepted Ace, despite Ace's very low status and the two went together through fire and water until they became very successful financially. We can choose to learn from other people's mistakes and get valuable wisdom to avoid the same pitfalls. No matter how harsh a person's circumstances may be, maintaining an overcomer's mindset helps us to become masters of our destiny.

What I liked most about this book is that is what the author mentioned that: His greatest achievement was to overcome the worst circumstances and turn them into a life he could be proud of. Even though the experiences of the author are so touching, it is so refreshing to see that the author came out victorious.

I would recommend this book to all parents and guardians and all those going through difficult phases of their lives. The mind is a very powerful tool that God has given all people. I did not find any errors in this book and this shows it was professionally edited. For the many profound lessons contained therein, I give the book a rating of 4 out of 4.
