Review by Ruth Fuller -- Natural Relief for Anxiety and ...
It is not everyone who finds it a warm and fuzzy experience to curl up on the couch and read a book about various ways to combat anxiety and stress, but that is exactly what I found this book to do for me. Natural Relief For Anxiety And Stress A Practical Guide, by Gustavo Kinrys, M.D. and Alexandra Gold, M.A., was a privilege and joy for me to read. I was excited to find that it was written by doctors from the Mayo Clinic because I have frequented their website for years. I love that this book contains a wealth of information including the many types of therapies that one could use instead of medications.
The authors give the reader many ideas and coping techniques that one can implement in seconds after reading about them. I find this to be very exciting and encouraging. The book also goes beyond this by neatly summarizing all its main points in charts contained in its back pages. There is also a useful grocery list of recommended foods that one could purchase at any supermarket to incorporate into their diet in order to help them overcome their anxiety and stress through proper nutrition. The majority of these are common foods that many people eat daily.
Writing from a biopsychosocial perspective, the authors cover all areas that are needed in order to overcome anxiety and stress. First, they explain in detail what anxiety and stress is and how it affects the body and emotions, and then they give various ways to relieve these symptoms apart from using medication. They explain things such as the fact that a tension headache feels like a tight band wrapped around one's head which reduces blood flow to the head and brain, which may cause pain in the eyes, face, and jaw. They also explain that many people do not do anything about their own anxiety because they do not understand the problems it can have on the body. One Of these problems is raising one’s cholesterol.
For many people, anxiety is constant even when their perceived threat that originally caused the anxiety is not present. Anxiety comes in various forms and it usually presents as various groups of symptoms rather than only one. As a result of anxiety, some people may have a pale complexion due to blood being diverted from their face to muscles in their body. The authors explain that it is important to understand that no one causes our anxiety along with the fact that we need to take responsibility for our thoughts and emotions because only we ourselves can do anything to change them. It is recommended to rename the term 'anxiety' to something specific such as the word 'fear'. This is said to aid in recovery.
Anyone who loves learning detailed meanings of terms to do with our emotional and mental health from a doctor's perspective would love this book. If you want to know about alternative therapies apart from medicine, and this from the perspective of a medical doctor, this book will be invaluable to you. It also serves very well as a reference manual because each chapter is written about a different aspect of alternative therapy and also has bold headings for each variation of that therapy for which the chapter is named.
Because I gained so much from this book for my own personal use and believe that anyone interested will be able to do the same, I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. It appears to be professionally edited and I found only 4 typos that did nothing to detract from my understanding of the topic. This was written in a way for anyone to learn from and immediately incorporate into their new and possibly healthier way of life.
