The Not So Great American Novel by James E. Doucette is an autobiographical book; a memoir narrating the author's trajectories from the earlier years of his life up to adulthood. James started writing this book at a difficult time in his life when he was recovering from cancer.

In the story, James E. Doucette who grew up in Bedford/Stuyvesant Brooklyn narrates his hard infancy, his tumultuous passage through high school, which was not actually easy. His passage through the USA Navy and culminating with his professional career and how he actually builds his beloved family.

I really like reading memoirs. I find it very brave when someone decides to write about his life to everybody; to actually open the box and share those personal and deep secrets with anyone. Furthermore, I have to confess that the title of the book was the first thing that called my attention; from the moment I picked up this book, my real intention was to find out why this book was considered to be "The not so Great American Novel." And at the end I concluded that the author was very smart to choose this name for the book; it calls up attention as it let people curious to know why it is not a great novel.

Another impressive aspect of this memoir is the love that the author has for his family. It is so much love that even this book was derived from the same love he has for his family. Furthermore, the story was really well developed. I liked the author mentioned the good and the bad aspect of his life such as the discrimination and racism that he faced and so on. Therefore, for a book design to inspire his grandson, I think the author focused a lot on present technical terms related to his professional career. And by being a book dedicated to his family I was hoping to see his family much more involved in this book than his career development.

Going forward, almost no profanity was mentioned in the story. And because of that, I believe the book is suited for young and mature readers as long as they enjoy a good memoir.

Furthermore, I would like to congratulate the author and publisher for the good work done while editing and proofreading this book; I didn't find any mistakes in the book and the for that reason, I will gladly rate this book with 4 out of 4 stars .
