Official Review: My Discovery of America by Julian Perez
Written by Julian Perez, My Discovery of America studies the ideologies that shaped the United States' foundation and compares them to the progressivism that characterizes contemporary politics. After examining documents like the Constitution's articles, the Bill of Rights, and the Federalist Papers, Perez argues that the Founding Fathers' objective was to establish a limited government with a separation of powers. Nevertheless, progressive politicians advocate for the federal government to acquire more power to solve social issues. Perez gives his opinion on why progressive ideas are an attack against the United States' founding principles.
I selected to review My Discovery of America because the author came to the United States after living in Cuba, a Caribbean island located 90 miles from Florida, with a communist government. My paternal family came from Cuba and went through the Cuban Revolution too, so I was curious about reading the author's opinion on the United States. Perez offers an objective perspective when he compares the Founding Fathers' ideologies to that of contemporary progressives. His objectivity surprised me because my family taught me how difficult life was in Cuba after the communists took over the government. I think the readers will benefit from an immigrant's objective perspective, particularly now, when people have a hard time listening to one another.
Besides the author's fresh and objective perspective, my favorite aspect of this book was its concise overview of how progressivism became popular in the United States. For example, Perez talks about President Woodrow Wilson's rejection of the restrictions of the Constitution. Contrary to the Founding Fathers, President Wilson believed that the Constitution should change according to historical times. Another interesting example, and one I did not know, is that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt tried to pack the court with justices that supported his New Deal domestic program. Does it sound familiar?
The author's writing style is easy to understand due to his ability to explain difficult concepts succinctly. However, the book needs another editorial revision. I found numerous grammatical errors that need to be fixed for the book to receive a better rating.
I rate My Discovery of America by Julian Perez 3 out of 4 stars because the author offers an objective overview of the principles upon which the United States was founded and modern progressive ideas. A professional editor has to work on the book, so I deducted a star. I recommend it to readers that enjoy non-fiction political books and those interested in the current division of ideas between conservatives and progressives.
