What do an ex-convict, a preacher, a musician, a Navy Seal, entrepreneurs, and a cancer survivor have in common? Their common denominator is their determination to succeed, never giving up till they get what they want. All of them are real people whose lives turned around when they refused to quit. Their real-life stories are part of the book called How To Be Successful that is written by M. Curtis McCoy. The author has applied life lessons into his business ventures and swears by their efficacy.

“Success is about doing something that improves the lives of others and makes you truly happy.” McCoy’s definition of success has an echo of the seven successful entrepreneurs he interviewed. They narrated their real-life experiences hoping to encourage and inspire the readers into emulating their formula for success. McCoy also shared his life challenges --- he was given only a few weeks to live --- and how he was able to overcome them through imparting the lessons he learned through this book.

McCoy’s book urges everyone to invest in oneself, practice delayed gratification, and stay focused on their dreams. There is also an emphasis on building strong relationships --- he believes that success is useless without the presence of relationships. Therefore, if you are on the verge of giving up, stop. Give this book a go, and you might get an adrenaline boost.

The book is written in a semi-formal style using simple sentences and simple words. This book makes it lighter for the readers to comprehend. The readers get motivated by the narration of real-life stories from the interviewees. It helps that these life-changers also came from humble beginnings --- they went through tough times and rough patches. Their experiences make for fascinating reading. Their interviews added some spice to the book and broke the monotony if there were any. It doesn’t mean that Mr. McCoy is a boring writer; the topics on success tend to be tiresome for some people. The questions presented by Mr. McCoy to his interviewees were practical and helpful to the readers. McCoy also included an unexpected section about the use of profanity and cursing. Another chapter has a devotion to a guide on what one should expect when he becomes successful. The readers need to take down notes to remember the vital points made in the book. The book is light enough that the reader can finish it in one sitting. However, I recommend that everyone should read it several times and let the lessons sink in. It is exceptionally well-edited.

Anyone can read this book, even younger people. It is not only for business-minded individuals and entrepreneurs, but preachers, educators, athletes, students, or even mistresses will find this book helpful. I give this book a 4 out of 4. It is due to its ability to keep the interest of the readers and for its content. The lessons espoused and shared by the author does not only apply to business but also applies to marriage, church ministry, and friendship.
