Review by LUCIAL -- From Drift to SHIFT by Jody B. Miller
From Drift to Shift , by Jody B. Miller, is a comprehensive book about change and its influence on our life, and it shows us how to deal with it to find happiness and true meaning. The author introduces eight real-life stories of people who had to shift, and who overcame challenges and obstacles that changed their life. Their transformational stories are inspiring, powerful and emotionally moving. All the people interviewed have discovered their true life and passion after facing terrible struggles; they help us understand that obstacles are part of our path, a way to show that we are improving.
Every story is centered on one aspect of the difficulties we all face when we have to change, starting from the reason why shifting is inevitable, to when and how we need to act, and how to find the right direction in our life. At the end of each chapter the author provides takeaways, questions and worksheets, which I find enlightening and useful. There are also pictures of the persons she interviewed, which give us more direct contact with people we might consider heroes if we compare their difficulties to our little everyday problems.
The book describes the active steps we need to follow to set our goals and commit to lasting habits. The author gives us an insight of her life experience and she suggests that we could start by changing little daily activities. Journaling, expressing gratitude, exercising, meditating, engaging in random acts of kindness are some of the practices she mentions in her blog. I loved the idea behind her suggested activity called ‘meet someone new every day’, I think it is a way to share and care for other people. Sometimes it is easier to live a non-satisfying life than risk, and most of us don’t even dare to change or don’t really know what would make them feel alive, what their real passion is. Even if it is not easy, we all need to listen to our inner self and follow it to find happiness.
The book is written in in a simple and conversational style, it is a page-turner despite the meaningful stories and quotes. The author shows empathy and encourages the reader to follow a path to self-discovery. She is inspiring and she makes us realize we are all human beings with similar needs, she sincerely shares her personal emotions without any mask. She refers to the main factors that help us change our suffering into positive: hope, social support, forgiveness and spirituality. For this reason, the book is suitable for every kind of reader, even for those who are happy with their life, because it gives us hints to improve and it shows we all have similar needs.
In the appendix the author listed additional reading material to improve our knowledge, articles on questions and practices to consider, resources with links and references about the eight personal stories. It is a great and inspiring read; every question or event gives way to new desire to investigate and learn more. I highly recommend this book since it is not only a self-help book, but it contains a lot of ideas on how to improve our life. Yet I found the detailed explanation of the Hindu deities related to chapter 8 too long. For this reason, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
