This book is an easy and entertaining read with a lot of interesting content. How To Be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy provides a lot of good points for entrepreneurs. It makes you think about what kind of person you want to be in business and how you can achieve that. It contains many valuable points that everyone who runs their own business should at least be aware of.

M. Curtis McCoy was successful at a very young age and then lost it all when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and given only 60 to 90 days to live. With the support of his parents, he overcame this diagnosis against all odds and was able to build up an emporium in the cellphone industry. He didn’t let his diagnosis define him and instead, he continued believing in himself and his potential. The book is a mix of interviews with successful people from different walks of life and personal recommendations from M. Curtis McCoy.

What I liked about the book was that it feels very authentic and real. It seems as M. Curtis McCoy wrote it as he sincerely wants to help others to become good (or better) business people. He also wants to help readers find the courage to be an entrepreneur, even if others might not believe in them. He provides a lot of useful recommendations that are easy to put in place for anyone.

The book differs from other self-help books as usually they are based on science, studies, statistics, etc. The information Mr. McCoy provides is solely based on personal experiences and experiences of people he interviewed. This makes the book feel authentic and somewhat like talking to a friend who gives you advice, rather than a book based on years of research on the topic.

What I enjoyed the least was that some of the interviewees didn’t seem to have such great insight to share. I also didn’t enjoy the chapter on cursing as I found it was unnecessary and should not even be a topic among professional entrepreneurs.

All in all, I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. It was very well edited as I didn’t come across any mistakes. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to others to read, especially anyone who runs or plans to run their own business. However, the recommendations provided are nothing that we haven’t heard before - get up early, stay humble, surround yourself with positive people, etc. Ultimately, the book adds limited value to the professional development world.
