The Trilogy of Bipolar Management Part 1 is a memoir by author Kris Rock that presents her childhood and early adult life in a chronological format. The memoir highlights the impacts of mental illness on the author's lifestyle and life choices. Some of the issues the author discusses include coming of age with a mentally ill parent, sexual awakening, drug use, and depression.

I appreciated the author’s ability to bring her life experiences into sometimes-painful clarity for the reader. The author has a gift for crafting vivid scenes and vibrant descriptions. That said, this is not an easy book to read. It is an eye-opening view of what it is like to be bipolar. Early in the book, the author explains that she wrote this memoir as a guide for others who are experiencing mental illness. Reliving challenging and even devastating events to create a book meant to help others is a brave and selfless act. I believe many readers will relate to the raw strength in the way the author describes how and why she made unfortunate choices in her life. Finally, the cliffhanger ending will encourage readers to seek out the next volume in this trilogy.

I have read a wide variety of memoirs; one thing I have noticed is that perhaps the most difficult choice for an author of a memoir is what to leave out. Kris Rock is a gifted wordsmith able to create evocative descriptions. However, the chronological structure of the memoir feels stilted and abrupt in many places. The memoir might be more impactful if the author had highlighted key moments from her life to illustrate specific themes, instead of sticking to a strictly chronological structure. I also noted many small editing errors like missing words that detract from the overall quality of the book.

I would recommend The Trilogy of Bipolar Management Part 1 to readers who are either experiencing mental illness themselves or seeking to understand the landscape of mental illness from the outside looking in. I would warn readers that this book contains graphic sex, profanity, and prolific drug and alcohol use; this is not a book for sensitive readers.

I believe that only certain kinds of readers will find the value in this memoir; however, this book could be a life-changing gift for the right reader. I give this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars because of its meaningful content. The lack of polished editing throughout the book prevents me from giving it a four-star rating.

I commend any author who is willing to share a personal memoir that delves so deeply into mental illness. So many traumatic experiences and hard life lessons often surface in these detailed depictions of struggle and sacrifice. Greatly appreciate your willingness to offer such an insightful and accurate critique of this title!

We need to have more conversations around mental illnesses and depression. These issues are often swept under the rug. Good job on the review! 👏

Many psychological experiences are best understood and treated from people's experience and this book sure does justice with it been filled with the experiences of the author. Great book and review

Thank you! I found this book very thought-provoking. As you said, not many people are willing to write about mental illness.
