The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life - Two Survivors Reveal the 13 Golden Pearls They’ve Discovered by Dr. Allen Lycka and Harriet Tinka, covers thirteen, plus one bonus, ideas that can potentially help a person believe in him or herself. These concepts are referred to metaphorically as golden pearls of wisdom. Each one can be studied and practiced alone or in conjunction with each other. There are no scientific studies to prove adhering to these concepts will make your life fantastic, but several real life examples are given to demonstrate they can improve your outlook toward life and help you create a more positive mindset.

Along with discussing and giving examples of the golden pearls, the authors also provide some exercises to help you on the road to living a fantastic life. I particularly enjoyed the exercise suggested for golden pearl 8, Attitude, of making a list of things I worry about, then looking back at which of these things actually came to pass. Most of them did not. This was an eye opener for me - my worrying about so many things only stresses me out and usually, in the end, there was nothing to really worry about at all. I also enjoyed reading about the seven words the Ancient Greeks used to classify different types of love, as opposed to our one word - love (golden pearl 1).

Both of the authors have survived life threatening experiences. They talk about these experiences repeatedly throughout the book. Harriet Tinka’s story is alarming and graphic. This book should not be read by people under 18. It would have been beneficial if some time was devoted to how to recognize stalkers, how to find help and protect yourself. The fact that Tinka has been able to turn her life and attitude around by focusing on these golden pearls is a strong testament to their usefulness in living a better life.

The book is written in a scripted dialogue form that gave me the impression I was reading the transcript of a podcast. The humor Dr. Allen Lycka and Harriet Tinka tossed back and forth felt awkward and forced when written in this format. Interspersed throughout the book are quotes from quite a variety of people. Often these quotes pop up in the middle of a story or conversation and break up the flow of thought. Also, almost all of these quotes, and several others, are reprinted like an appendix at the end of the book. In the listing of the 144 quotes at the end of the book, four of them are listed twice.

There were a few editing mistakes in The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life , but nothing too disruptive to reading and understanding the message of the book. There is a lot of self promoting in this book, which I did not enjoy. For these reasons, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. If you are feeling down or lost, if you need some encouragement to help get through a difficult time, then you may find some help in what Dr. Allen Lycka and Harriet Tinka have to say. The golden pearls they discuss may help you develop a more positive mindset. If you don’t find exactly what you need in this book, the authors make it clear they will be publishing more books soon, so you may find what you need in their upcoming books.
