I am Loving the Me That I’m Choosing to Be is a non-fiction children’s book written by Victoria Alercia-Casella, a Licensed Professional Counselor. This book is intended for parents to read with their children as it contains positive affirmations that are each followed by a journal entry prompt to be completed by the child and/or adult. The book is meant to encourage children and adults alike to show themselves kindness and then pass that kindness onto their peers as they lead by example.

The thing I liked most about this book was the message behind each affirmation and journal prompt. The children’s affirmations are simply worded, but the journal prompts encourage the child to go a bit deeper and explore how they execute those affirmations for themselves and for others. The adult affirmations encourage parents to explore ways in which they can change their already-established behaviors to help themselves and their children.

The thing I liked least about the book was that it didn’t necessarily come full circle. While the parents are going to help the children go through their affirmations and journaling section, I feel like a part of the book’s message is having children go through the adult section with their parents, as well. Perhaps I have misunderstood what the author intended; however, I think that it would make the book come full circle by allowing the parent and child to have the tough discussions through the entire book, not only for the child's portions.

While it is obvious upon completion of the book, I think that the book would benefit from clearly delineating between which portion is for children and which is for adults. As I was first reading, I understood the journaling to be something that both the child and the adult filled out together. However, as I got to the latter half of the book, I realized that the children’s section is the first half and the adult section is the second half. If this book were used repeatedly with parents and their children, then people would learn which portions were theirs to complete; however, a clear setting apart between the two sections would make it easier to navigate from the beginning.

This book was professionally edited and there are no errors. I would rate I am Loving the Me that I’m Choosing to Be by Victoria Alercia-Casella 3 out of 4 stars. The book has a great message and the journal prompts add a twist on your average positive affirmation book. I believe that families would greatly benefit from this book and the conversations that it will spark in the home.

Judging from the title of this book, I didn't think that this book will be for children. But I like the format this book appears in. Nice review!

I can understand what you mean with the book not coming full circle. I agree with you.

The title grabbed my attention instantly. It gave me an insight on what to expect from the book. Let us teach our children the value of kindness when they are still young and they will grow up to be wonderful adults.
Thank you for the detailed review.

Victoria advices children and adults to first show themselves kindness then they can pass it on to others.
