Review by Rave4 -- How To Be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy
"Don't ask what the world needs, but ask what makes you come alive because what the
World needs is you fully
Alive."
Do you sometimes ponder what true success is? Do you often wish you could make meaning out of your life? Are you starting a new business and need some advice on how to make it big? Do you want to be a better person? How To Be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy addresses these and many other issues. This book tells the inspiring story of how the author survived brain cancer after being given a few days to live, manages diabetes type 1, and started a company which became a huge success, from a shop which also served as his bedroom. Interviews with the author's friends and mentors , as they answer a 15 line questionnaire on various issues including; how to become better; what does success really mean? And different sections on topics like; how to be an overnight success; making new friends; teach people how to treat you; plus so many others, make up the remaining part of this book. How To Be Successful delivers a powerful message of belief, hard work, patience, and love.
There are so many books out there that claim to be inspiring and have the ability to change your life, but only a few can stimulate readers to believe, hope, and work for the best in the way this book does. M. Curtis McCoy in the passage of this book has used his experience as; a CEO who slept in his shop during the early stages of his company; and a brain cancer survivor, to inspire faith and hope in such a way that is believable. According to him, there is no excuse not to be successful, and he gives life stories to prove this. While this book generally acknowledges that success is a complex phenomenon, and encourages people to strive for important things like a happy family, peace of mind, and fulfillment, it also strongly suggests that money is key for success.
Sometimes, it is best to practice delayed gratification, i.e, forgo short term convenience for a long-term goal. Failure could be a better teacher than success. Surround yourself with positive people and those who complement your skills. Rewarding yourself when you achieve a goal can motivate you to achieve a greater feat.
There are so many things to love about this book. First, I think the author did a superb job selecting those he interviewed. This rich selection includes; CEO s, pastors, a mother, a former convict, a navy seal, and some others. They cut across different fields, enabling readers to get a very broad perspective on the issues addressed in this book, for instance, one person defined success as, 'winning in all that really matters', another defined it as, 'the progressive realization of a worthwhile dream.' I also love the author's direct approach. He doesn't waste your time trying to teach you one magic formula or, hidden secret to success, rather he opens your eyes to obvious truths, telling you what you probably already knew and giving you good reasons to continue in these truths. As brilliant as this work is, it is a huge letdown for me that this book is badly edited. It contains so many typographical errors. That said, It would take more than typographical errors to kill the brilliance of this work. The message was so powerful, I didn't really mind.
I would rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars. This book has something in it for everyone. Although it is strongly inclined towards the Christian faith, some of the interviewees talked about prayer and their faith as playing an integral role in their success, still, I believe this book can be read by members of any religion without the fear of being offended (I did not find it offensive). I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind becoming successful.
