Review by chanine_d -- How To Be Successful
How To Be Successful: Think Like a Leader is a book written by M. Curtis McCoy who is an author, speaker, and CEO of Best Cellular. The book is a compilation of interviews of seven successful people who shares different insights about how to succeed in life. These seven are Curtis himself, Jeff “Biggs” Wobig, Connie Wyatt, Paul B. Watson, Caujuan Mayo, Nathan Schulhof, and Jeff McGregor.
The book begins with McCoy’s introduction and his answers to the interview questions. In the following chapters are the interviews of the other six people. Reading this book is like learning the insights of people in different walks of life. Interviews always started with the question of their definition of success, and though it is answered in various ways, interviewees always emphasized that success is not only measured financially, but it also depends on how you live your life and what you do for the people around you.
The best thing about this book is that you’ll gain wisdom in every chapter. There’s nothing to dislike about because you’ll learn something from the whole book. There are bible quotes and quotes from the interviewees themselves that will give the reader an enlightenment of things in life that can be only explained by people who learned from experience. One of the things that I learned is McCoy’s emphasis in practicing delayed gratification. One should practice rewarding himself/herself when achieving long-term goals, not short-term goals. It is important to acknowledge small achievements, but achieving long-term goals have a bigger impact in our lives and must be prioritized.
I wrote excerpts of this book in a notebook so I can always look back to the best lines that I read. One of them is when Watson quoted Howard Thurman. Thurman said, “Don’t ask what the world needs, but ask what makes you come alive because what the world needs is you fully alive.” I think everyone can relate to this when someone feels like we have to fulfill a duty or serve a purpose in the world when in reality, what truly matters is doing what you love. For me, “fully alive” means feeling fulfillment in everyday life.
There are no errors in this book and I can tell that it is edited well. I rate it 4 out of 4. This book is recommended to people of any age, because everyone is always learning in life. I strongly believe that greatest wisdom comes from listening and learning from others. That’s why podcasts and reading books like this is the best way to improve ourselves every day.
