M. Curtis the CEO of Best Cellular, in his book, How To Be Successful teaches and exposes some of the secrets of successful people and businesses. He tells of the untold struggles that many “overnight millionaires” have, struggles that people that see the success and wealth of their millionaires don’t see, using himself and his stories as examples.

The book addresses some of the very ways that success is built. It tells of how much hard work and resilience pays off and recounts stories of some serious struggles in the life of the author. For example, when the author was told that he had just 90 days to live because of a brain tumor, he didn’t let the news deter him from seeking ways to live his life to the fullest and leave a legacy behind. He didn’t let the promise or the threat of death stop him from trying to achieve his goals. This is a very important message as many use their present predicament in life as an excuse to feel sorry for themselves and throw a pity party, when in fact they can choose to beat all the odds like Thomas Jefferson did, turn their failures in life into a learning opportunity and find tirelessly a way to finally succeed. They forget that the cards they are dealt in life doesn’t always determine whether they will win the game or not.

M. Curtis writes the interviews that he had of some big-shot entrepreneurs and successful people in the world today. People like Connie Wyatt (CMO of Best Cellular), Paul B. Watson of Downtown Church, Eric Payne of Ventures, including an interview of himself. Here the fears, strengths, weaknesses, commitments, and character traits of these successful and wealthy men are made public to the world. There is just so much to learn from the lives of these people and I greatly appreciate the chance to have a peek into what made them who they are.

The book How To Be Successful also addresses important topics like relationships, friendships, dressing, countenance, words, sacrifice and reward and the role all of the these play in determining how successful can individual will be in their life. My favorite chapter was on the topic the use of profanity and vulgar language and the myth that people who use it often have a higher IQ than those that do not. I loved that he debunked that myth and he talked about how important choice of vocabulary is when doing business with people. You must be able to sell yourself to people and not only give them a reason to do business with you but also assure them that they can be comfortable around you.

One thing that I didn’t quite like with the book was the font style. It was written with a style that made it seem like it was typed with a typewriter. It took me a few minutes before my brain adjusted to reading the text but after that, I pretty much got used to the style and reading was seamless. Some readers may experience same, but I promise that the book is worth the read at the end of the day.

The book has just 185 pages but I must confess that there is more nuggets of wisdom in those few pages than many have come across in their entire life. No one, except the dead has any excuse to not be successful. And even though success is sweet, it also comes with its own challenges and sets of problems.

Typographical and grammatical errors were non-existent which led me to believe that it was indeed professionally edited, it passes a truckload of knowledge that if used will definitely lead to a more comfortable and successful life. For this reason and all of the above I give this book a 4 out of 4 star rating. Although the author referenced the Bible to buttress or explain points a number of times, I feel like this will not affect the belief of anybody that is non-Christian. By virtue of this, I recommend this book to anybody of any religion that seeks success and would love to learn from the experience of successful people.
