How to be successful: think like a leader by M.Curtis McCoy is a motivational and inspirational self-help book. It is divided in short paragraphs, followed by interviews with successful people. The way they describe their life experiences makes them sound like ordinary people, and not only successful persons isolated from the rest of the world. The change of subjects makes the text very light and easy to read.

Every short paragraph is based on a single topic, mainly on a soft skill to improve like: meet new friends, manage our time, improve our attitude towards people and life. The topics are all manageable and part of our daily life, so the general feeling we have is that success can be obtained by those who want and try, and it is not an impossible dream. The author also describes his personal life in detail, including the difficult times he faced because of his health problems.

The interviews are true stories and they are life lessons about all aspects: business, family, religion, friendship. They are conversations with leaders and entrepreneurs about the way they see success and personal growth. There aren’t loud messages about future dreams: the main idea is that successful people can influence us and be an example. I found the lesson from Jeff “Biggs” Wobig, US Navy SEAL sniper, quite interesting: it explains how to break down difficult moments taking one minute at a time, one hour at a time, pushing yourself to the next step.

The author wants to inspire the reader to take charge of his life with daily effort, since we are all responsible for our decisions and attitude to reach success and constant progress. He suggests practicing delayed gratification, self-discipline and self-control. He underlines the importance of hard work and dedication, and of consistent action to achieve our goals, even when facing difficult times and under stress. Being authentic and real, we can become the best version of ourselves.

I have read a lot of books and articles on this subject and I was afraid of getting the same message again. Yet this book was a positive surprise, because it gives us a lot of advice and it makes us think about our attitude in life and about the values and character traits we admire in people. Yet I think the insights on the author’s religion are not suitable for all readers. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.

I like this author's format of short paragraphs on a single topic backed up with real-life examples. I appreciated your comments about what makes this book different from other motivational books. I'll give this one a try! Thanks for the recommendation.

I read this book too and I fully agree with you, it gets heavy on religion. I really liked your review👍
