Get Out Alive by Steve Cederquist is a self-help book that details not only methods of deep thinking and reflection, but the author’s life of crime and dysfunction before he finally found himself and the will to live a good life. This book is proof that no matter what anyone may be going through, they have the power to get out of that situation and thrive, even if it is the deadly habit of drug addiction.

Steve began by introducing the audience to his younger self. His idea is that we all are still like the children we once were; we do not change and become entirely different people, but we just lose our way sometimes. He then went on to narrate how he met his wife and how they both contributed to each other’s downfall. When he hit rock bottom and found himself in prison, he still continued in his harmful ways. One day, he had an epiphany, a pivotal moment that turned his whole life around. After leaving his horrible life behind, he found a way to be the successful contractor, dedicated father, and beautiful human being he is now. This book shares with the world how Steve overcame his tendency for self-destruction.

I loved this book! Even though I feel like I am on the right track and have no destructive habits, I had a lot to learn from Cederquist. This book was not overbearing in the way that many self-help books are, and I appreciated that. I was able to make an emotional connection with the tips and pieces of advice because the author shared his story, and it was not rosy at all. Another thing I like about this book is its brief nature; with 190 pages, Cederquist succinctly gave meaningful advice without beating around the bush.

The writer also included DIY stories from other people who have read the book. Scattered across the book are tasks that the reader can perform to propel them to dig deep and find courage. It is after these tasks that the DIY stories are put. This can give the reader the feeling that they are not the only ones who want to be better people. I, for one, got a sense of camaraderie from this. Even though my story is different from theirs, it gave me an idea of how to perform the tasks anytime I felt lost. I must stress that the author’s advice did not sound impossible to do or far fetched. If you cannot relate to his advice, I’m almost certain that his story will inspire you.

I found nothing to dislike about this book. At first, I wondered why the author was sharing his story, but as I read further, I couldn’t imagine the book any other way. I especially recommend this book to anyone going through a crisis and wants inspiration to live better. However, I urge everyone to read this book because crisis or not, everyone has something to learn from Cederquist’s story. This book has some profanity and mildly erotic scenes. I hardly found any errors, so I can say that it was exceptionally edited. I rate Get Out Alive a deserved 4 out of 4 stars.

This is a nice review and I look forward to reading the book. I would love to know why Steve and his wife marriage did not work out and how they both contributed to their downfall. More so, I would love to know what cause the turn around in his life.

Wonderful review, brings forth the idea of a profound story that may be personal but could shed light on a perspective different from people's own but then there could always be something to derive.

The title is a bit of an oxymoron, isn't it? No one gets out of this alive. We all pass on. Not to be a downer, but that's what irritates me about self-help books. The assumption of a positive outcome. I'm glad the author has found his way back to a productive life, but the reality is that people die every day and where I live, people often die from overdosing. I hope his book does inspire someone, even one person, to turn their lives around. Regrettably, most people have to hit their rock bottom and follow their paths to healing. I enjoyed reading your review, but I don't often choose to read self-help books. Thanks for your well-written review.

What made Steve turn away from his harmful ways must have been phenomenal.
