DOn't QuIT: The Jason Merkle Story by Kyle S. Reynolds is a notable memoir of a young man’s journey in battling cancer. The 168-page book has been divided into different chapters that highlighted the events in the life of the book’s main character, Jason.

The narrative begins in the city of Williamston, Michigan. A thirteen-year-old boy, Jason Merkle, is living his life like every other kids of his age. Born in a middle-class family, Jason is a very active child who loves sports and enjoys worshiping God. In the year 1994, Jason begins to have some noticeable tremors in his hands. His parents, upon receiving advice, have decided to take him in for a CT scan. It turned out that he has a benign tumor and that same year he got his first brain surgery. As things seems to be smooth sailing, seven years later, some news came to the Merkle family that will change their lives forever. Jason’s tumor is now malignant, and the worst part is that he has only two to twelve months to live. A healthy and active teenager who is just starting to live his life suddenly has a limited time. How would Jason react? Will he quit or will he believe in miracles and will say to himself, “DOn’t QuIT”?

I really enjoyed reading this book. Each chapter is a new story of faith and willpower. I also love the pictures included in some chapters which shows the authenticity of the events that have been narrated. Honestly, at first, I have this perception that the story will be tear-jerking. As I am reading the book, I find it inspirational rather than distressing. There are some parts where I find it funny especially when Jason are with his friends. Jason’s positive outlook and courageous heart helps him with his situation. Aside from that, this story is very informative that at least we can have an insight about the pros and cons of the treatments that have been introduced to us for so many years. The book also discusses the alternative ways that serves as a treatment for cancer. There is a part of the book where you can get tips on what to ask to the doctor in case you will face this disease as well. Also included is a winning strategy list that serves as a to-do list which can help you to survive. The author, Kyle S. Reynolds, also shares his own story on how he managed to overcome cancer at the latter part of the book.

I could not find anything to dislike about this book. I love how the story was written. The relationship of Jason and his family is so ideal. The book showcases the family’s deep relationship with God. By reading the book, it will serve as a wake-up call that life is short and that we must do our utmost share of caring for our body. It is an inspiring work of art that gives the readers a detailed account of how God works in our life, and how we can find hope in times of despair. The message of faith and determination is what I enjoyed most about this book. Generally, a person experiencing terrible events in life loses hope.

I can say that the book is properly written as I found no errors while reading it. There are no disturbing or foul words used. It is so heart-warming to be able to read a story which reflects hope even in tough times. For these reasons, I am rating this book with 4 out of 4 stars. I highly recommend it to someone who needs some inspiration and support against lifelong battles. If you are a person who loves to read Bible verses and inspiring quotes, this is the right one for you.
