On a global scale, there are many people with certain psychological and behavioral problems that resulted from past traumatic experiences or emotional pains. Some people carry the burden of unresolved traumas from way back in their childhood, right into their adulthood. This book, The Secrets to living a fantastic life addresses and categorically states that instead of being imprisoned by a victim mentality, it is best to adopt a new mind-set that will help you conquer, because it is not what happens to you that matters, it is what you do with what happened that matters.

The authors, Dr. Allen Lycka and Harriet Tinka are two good friends who both had some ugly and traumatizing experience in the past, independently. Their unnerving stories are explicitly recounted in the book. Together, but in individual voices, they both share in the book how they healed and rose from these experiences to thrive in life, having discovered the secrets to a fantastic life. Their aim is to use their experience to help others.

The ‘secrets’ are metaphorically known in the book as ‘Golden pearls’. Different golden pearls are discussed in different sections of the book. A total of thirteen golden pearls plus one extra is discussed in the book. I found it really insightful to follow the authors’ discussions on each golden pearl. My favourite part of the book is the section about the golden pearl of non-negotiables. I understood that everyone should have some principles that they should never compromise on. Both authors shared their list of top non-negotiables and Harriet went on to share a personal story on why her value was her biggest non-negotiable. As I read through this section, I found myself also listing out what struck me as my top four non-negotiables which I know are off any table of discussion.

I really appreciate that this book has a conversational, engaging and participatory nature. It has an undeniable flow that reaches out to its readers, helping the readers to easily relate and connect with its content. A good number of times while reading the book, I felt like I was watching Dr. Lycka and Harriet on television and some other times, I literally paused to reflect on what was being said. The book really does a good job of reaching out to the readers. I particularly like how stories were used to explain and highlight the main points embedded in each section.

There was nothing much to dislike about the book. Apart from two minor errors that I noticed, the book was well edited and it is very readable. What doesn’t really sit well with me however, is the title of the book; “The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life”. I think this topic generalizes and exaggerates the content of this book because living in accordance to the fourteen golden pearls shared in this book does not guarantee an excellent and splendid (fantastic) life, but it can however make for an excellent and sound mental or psychological health and so, the topic could be streamlined to this aspect. I am of the opinion that this can even help the target readers (people looking to rise from past traumas) find the book easily.

I found the contents of this book very valuable, interesting and well crafted, that’s why I give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to teenagers and adults who have had past traumatic experiences or basically anyone who wants to improve his/her psychological state and way of living for a better life.
