"According to the American Thyroid Association more than 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease--and as many as 60% are not even aware of their condition." In The 21 Day Thyroid Plan: Thriving With Hashimoto's, Mark Pilja equips readers with tools to relieve their symptoms. He identifies "...the four pillars of thyroid health--diet, exercise, stress management, and sleep." The book includes chapters on thyroid function, autoimmune diseases, foods that support the thyroid and immune systems, weight loss and stress management techniques, improving sleep, and maximizing exercise. Pilja also provides tips for eliminating home toxins, boosting the immune system, and applying the concepts daily.

The 189-page guide is organized, well written, and exceptionally edited. Pilja begins the book with the basics of thyroid function and the immune system, and true to its title, much of the content focuses on healthy lifestyle changes that will benefit readers with Hashimoto's disease. However, chapters such as "How to Get Food During a Pandemic" and "Sleep You've Dreamed Of" illustrate that the book is more than a diet plan for those with thyroid problems. While each chapter includes an abundance of advice for readers with Hashimoto's, there are many practical tips for living a healthier lifestyle in general, including purging the pantry, managing stress, and exercising more efficiently.

I particularly like that Pilja includes healthy lifestyle recommendations in light of the current pandemic. Although he stresses maximizing care of the immune system to support the thyroid, he also explains that strengthening immunities aids in resistance to the novel coronavirus. Likewise, managing underlying health risks like obesity and high blood pressure may lessen the severity of the virus symptoms. I also appreciate that Pilja consistently supports his findings; his cited references are included at the end of the book. For instance, after stating that low vitamin D levels have been associated with respiratory infections, Pilja recommends getting at least 15 minutes of sunlight daily. He provides an example from the 1918 flu pandemic that "...those who were treated outdoors had lower mortality rates and higher recovery rates than patients treated indoors."

In the final chapter, Pilja illustrates how to apply the book's concepts by creating sample daily routines that implement gratitude, meditation, exercise, medication, paleo meal plans, and relaxation practices before going to sleep. After consistently following the practices for 21 days, readers with Hashimoto's should experience improvements in their health, appearance, and positivity.

As I am unable to highlight anything I dislike about this excellent resource for those with Hashimoto's, I am pleased to rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. In addition to the targeted audience, I would also recommend it to readers who are interested in strengthening their immune system during the pandemic. It contains no profanity.

I love the seamless flow of information. People that aren't in the medical related field will not find it too difficult to relate.
Flawless Review.
